Who took up fishing thanks to their dad?

Looking through some of the threads it seems that quite a few members pass on hints and tips they learnt from their dads. And that got me wondering just how many of us did in fact take up fishing at a young age because our dads used to take us. My earliest memories go back sixty-odd years when my dad would take me to fish along the Thames banks shortly after the war. I've still got a lot of his gear; it's not much use today, but I still can't bring myself to dump it. Who else was introduced to our noble art by his dad or a near relative?

Re: Who took up fishing thanks to their dad?

yep my old man started me at it 60+ years ago, even today was cleaning up some wire patenosters that were his, using them next week on the solent.
a lot of lore and advice, but somehow lacking technique, dad that was, to watch him trying to cast a multiplier, getting a birds nest, then me walking along the beach, while he unravelled it, lol, soon learnt the correct way, learned by his mistakes
we went 1 day to countess wier at exeter, bait he used was raw bacon rind and the white fat, needless to say we blanked, but the man fishing by the bridge base had loads of flatties on rag. lol

Re: Who took up fishing thanks to their dad?

Great post.

My dad introduced to fishing when I was 5 I was catching little pollock wrasse and blennies. Ever since then I've been hooked and now fly fish, carp, sea and match. It's a past time that gets handed down from father to son and long so it may continue.

Re: Who took up fishing thanks to their dad?

Well .. back in 1985-87 i lived in Berlin and started to coarse fish in the massive Havel lake that was teeming with fish ..
In Kladow where i fished ( and we lived ) there are various schnell imbiss - basically places that sell bratwurst, chips, beer etc for those not familiar with the country..
On the ONE and ONLY trip my dad ever came fishing he was steaming within a few hours and my mother never let him go again !!

Re: Who took up fishing thanks to their dad?

Me :)

remember the old man taking me down a water park aged 7 with a blue kids rod and plastic reel. remember we blanked a couple of times then we found a small pond and we caught a gudgeon, all elated the park warden came round and told us there was no fishing in the wildlife pond

From then pretty much every week we went, till I was about 17.

Me dad wasn't a hive of information but he'd always persist while i tried and messed about using bite alarms and the like.
