| Advice on fixed spool reel needed. Hi everyone, I've just retired and just joined the forum. I'm looking to buy a fixed spool reel for estuary fishing on sand and mud. Has anyone any experience of the cormoran seacor Big Ben 6000 reel? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you. |

| Re: Advice on fixed spool reel needed. Its reviewed in Sea Angler ,they seem to rate it . http://www.gofishing.co.uk/Sea-Angle...-Ben-6PI-6000/ Might be a bit of overkill for estuary fishing tho ,i`d pop along to your local tackle shop and have a chat with them. __________________ Mike.. | Re: Advice on fixed spool reel needed. I hope you are a regular customer at your local tackle shop,as far too many shops are happy to flog all manner of cr@p to unsuspecting customers - especially those who are complete newcomers to the sport. If you would like to be more specific about where you're going to be fishing and what species you are targetting it would give us a chance to be more helpfull and provide you with better advice. |

My mate has one of those reels and is well pleased with it,the only problem being that it don't much like saltwater so be sure to give it a good rinse under the tap after every trip. |

| Re: Advice on fixed spool reel needed. I've been a member of this forum for less than two days yet already its members are offering help! Thank you, I am most appreciative. I am grateful that LittleFish suggests I tell you a bit about myself so that the best advice can be given, so here goes: I am 66 years old and fish mostly on my own. I am not what you would call an angling fanatic, but now I'm retired I'd like to fish at least once each week. This year I've fished one session each at Chesil Beach, Selsey beach and Bracklesham Bay - all totally blank (probably because they were daylight sessions). Normally I fish the south shore of the Thames from the QE2 bridge (where I've had bass to 3lb and sole to 2lb) down to Herne Bay and all places in between. I don't target any particular species, I just go after the type that are about at the time I fish. I can cast 110 yards maximum (on a good day) but such a distance is seldom required on the Thames. I have a Fox Warrior 12 foot beachcaster which handles 4 to 6 0z leads. I also have a 40 year old Woolworths rod which was my Dad's. It casts better than the Fox. Both rods are rung for fixed spool reels. My two present reels are past their best and need replacing (hence my first post). Thanks also to Avitsomemore for his reel suggestion, I'll have a look at those too. Kind regards to all. |

| Re: Advice on fixed spool reel needed. Does it necessarily follow that it's easier to cast distance with a fixed spool reel having large spool diameter and well filled with line right up to the spool lip? (as opposed to a smaller diameter spool only half filled with line). |
