what weight bass surf casting?

What sort of weight should I use for sea bass surf casting?
I have a 10lb line with 45lb shock leader, which should allow up to 100g of weight or so and my lures are 20-40g but is 100g weight really necessary?

Also, where's good for sea bass fishing down on the South Devon coast (preferably Teignmouth, Exmouth, or Budleigh)?

Would prefer beaches to piers or bridges tbh...

Re: what weight bass surf casting?

personally i think you should go for 18-20lb mono straight through and get rid of the shockleader - even swap the mono for a low diameter braid ..
A dexters wedge or large rapala should have enough weight to get it into the bass zone which is normally no more than 30yards out !
Any harbour mouth is a good place to start and chesil throws up some decent fish too - im sure ive seen threads about bassing down that way in on the forum .

Sorry, I meant I had 20...was a typo.
Is Chesil in Dorset? Bit far for me really. I could fish down by the Teign or maybe Exmouth but isn;t the Exe protectes and also don;t the estuaries have sewage?
What weight would the large rapalas be?
Also, when does bass season last until? I'm assuming I can;t eat anything less than 41cm: http://www.sea-fishing.org/nfsa-size-limits.html

Re: what weight bass surf casting?

only parts of the estuaries are nursery areas - even then rod and line fishing doesnt count and theres very little crap in the water mate .. Bass thrive on the easy pickings and are generally found on the south coast almost all year round ...hot times are from june till october with some monsters being landed in the winter months but on natural baits like crab or mackerel ..
youre right on the size limits for keepers

This site recommends 30-120g of weight: http://www.worldseafishing.com/marks...ary_devon.html
That's a fair amount?!

Some of the inshore rules seem to be here: http://www.ukbass.com/seabassandfish...horerules.html
Exe:
All tidal waters enclosed by a line drawn 068º true from Langstone point to Orcombe point.
That seems to me to close off most of the estuary or does it only apply to mesh nets?
