Question Complete beginner needing guidance

Hi all, i am a complete beginner to fishing and just needing a bit of guidance to get me up and running. I recently got invited to go fishing with me uncle, i have always fancied fishing but didnt no whether id enjoy it or have a clue what im doing. Well ill tell you i didnt enjoy it, i loved it!! and now im completely hooked but the only problem is what im doing. I recently bought a rod and fixed spool reel, weights, hooks etc. I checked with my uncle and he said everything i got was correct. So the next day off i went to the beach to try my arm alone. I was the only one on the beach so i was chuffed about that as i didnt want to get embaressed when something went wrong. I set up my rod and when the tide was coming in i cast out, nothing went wrong and i realy enjoyed myself even if i didnt catch anything. Since then ive been a few times around different spots in my area and still loving chilling out with my rod. The problem(s) im having are :-
*My knots keep coming undone when casting (loosing hooks, weights, swivels etc)

*I cant tell if i have a bite when its windy(Will it be obvious when i get one?)

*I keep reading about "Shock Leader"? This is probably a stupid question but what does this do? Do i need this? Is it for just making your rigs?

I have been reading various websites and posts on hear trying to find out my problems, I have just bought some 60lb and some 30lb monofilement line to make rigs with as i have read somewhere they will help knots coming undone? This makes sense in my head as iv only been using a 12lb line for my rigs and have stuff flying off everywhere. Any feedback, tips and guidance would be greatly appreciated as i dont want to get fed up with fishing when im enjoyng it so much. (The term "All the gear and no idea" springs to mind ) Cheers

Re: Complete beginner needing guidance

sounds to me like your trying to use coarse fishing gear for sea fishing?
the reason your knots are coming undone maybe becuase your casting to big a weight this is where a shockleader comes in its a lenght of line maybe 50/ 60 lb it should be long enough to wind around your reel about 10 times then the lenght of your rod and a foot or two on top

Re: Complete beginner needing guidance

Im using 5oz or 6oz weights on my rigs would these be to big?
So does the shock leader get tied straight onto my existing line(on the reel)?

Shockleader – Fishing Line Part 2
(although covered before in various threads thought I would put in its own dedicated thread )

Shockleader what is it ?

A Shockleader is a length of monofilament line that is designed to absorb the pressure of casting weights when shore fishing or when boat fishing using braid line ect

Shockleader generally comes on spools of 20 meter lengths to 70 meter lengths and have a greater elasticity than standard monofilament fishing line

There are new tapered shockleaders on the market that start at e.g 15lb (the end you connect to your main line and then increase to 60lb ) these look great - as wellyfish and kiwi showed me the last time we fished together

When and how to use a Shockleader

When shores fishing, you are casting lead weights under great pressure, which can and does result in your main line snapping

This is very dangerous and can cause great danger to other people around you whilst fishing (the lead weight can be like a small cannon ball) so always use a Shockleader!!

As a rule of thumb

1 oz lead weight you will need 10lb of breaking strain Shockleader

4oz lead weight 40lb and so on

Joining your main line to your Shockleader

Use 10lb breaking strain of leader per 1oz of weight , so 6oz lead = 60lb shockleader .....

Take a look at this short video ,hopefully will make sense straight away ...
