| identification i know i can look it up in a reference book but i prefer the info first hand from somebody who knows, how would i tell the difference between a large LSD and a small bull huss, similarly,how would i tell if i had caught a small tope or a small smoothie, this might be a question for mike     |

| Re: identification Large Lesser Spotted Dogfish can look like a small huss ,as some have some very large blotches and markings, which can be confusing .The only obvious differance is in the nostrils , huss have flared nostrils, lsd have not. Bull Huss ,even juveniles ,are quite agressive when handled ,and will try to bite you ,LSD `s are normally pretty passive apart from try to rasp off your skin This illustrationn from an old fishing book shows the "big" differance............Small Huss and big LSD together .....   Bull Huss have flared nostrils compared to the Lesser Spotted Dogfish   LSD ,have a much flatter nasel flap with a oval centre ,and the flaps are flat to the nose of the fish   There are subtle differances between hounds and baby tope, but the easiest way is the most obvious,tope however small have a proper set of nashers, just like their parents..hounds have rough crushing plates not teeth.The snout of the tope tends to be pointier and is a translucent colour too .Baby common hound pups can be strikeingly similar to a baby tope tho.
