Question On Screw-on butt on new rod?? Hi Ive just bought a new Shakespeare In2 Beachcaster rod (telescopic) for bits of holiday fishing rather than trying to use my coarse rod. Very very pleased with the rod it feels excellent in-hand. One curious query if anybody knows please. The bottom of the but unscrews off, exposing the cavity inside the rod sections. Im curious as to why. A few of my theories: 1. For removing the rod sections for maintenance and fixing (though this would need removal of the rod rings first, and they seem very fixed) 2. A neat convenient hidey hole for a couple of floats and similar as it is a travel rod (though this seems a bit unlikely as they may get stuck or interfere with the rod secions. 3. For cleaning, so if the rod goes in the water it can be drained and cleaned easier, though a hole in the butt might have served. 4. Easier manufacture. Though I would think just glueing on a butt plate would have been easier than arranging for a screw-in 5. Does it make the rod fit some sort of rod-stand if the butt is unscrewed? Its not really important at all, but I really am curious as to the reason and if this is standard on other beach rods, or maybe even just rods much newer than my other rods. Thanks for the time of anyone reading my post and having a think about it, and thanks for any info. Alex ( BobSpoons )

Re: Question On Screw-on butt on new rod?? Alex, i like you could probably list a few theories but yours sound fairly plausable however i'm not sure any of them are correct ![]() My rods have a butt cap made of rubber that i can remove to slide coasters on the butt and have never come accross what you describe ! mind you i despise telescopic rods and would probably only use it to hold up my washing line on holiday ![]() __________________ Shore Species 2012: Dab-Flounder-Herring-L.S.Dogfish-Pouting-Shore Rockling-5 Bearded Rockling-Small Eyed Ray-Turbot-Whiting

Re: Question On Screw-on butt on new rod?? Haha thanks for your reply Scottish. Ive always been ok with teles as I have a few from years ago for light spinning and general coarse. Then again, I am not a particularly good angler so I may not be skilled enough to notice the difference. The thing with the rod is that it just seems like a design thing-of-purpose. My brain says that if it wasnt needed, then it would have been just a push-fit rubber bung, a moulded end-piece, or glued-in plug. But making it screw threaded with a screw cap seems too much fuss unless there is a good reason, and the lack of reason niggles me (I am a little bit ocd and so these things do tend to niggle me). Thanks again for your reply and fingers corssed for anyone with more suggestions. Alex ( BobSpoons ) Edited for spelling

Re: Question On Screw-on butt on new rod?? I would probably be in the same boat if i was you ... i like to make things - from an early age with lego to years as a carpenter and cabinet maker , so i'd like to think there was a use for said hollow hidey hole . your one for removing a section for repair sounds most likely but as you say , you would need to re whip the eye on that section and i'm not sure on the cost of a new rod but can't see it being a viable option on a cheapie rod . Sadly it's now bothering me so i'm gonna google it to see if i can find out its real purpose ![]() Steve __________________ Shore Species 2012: Dab-Flounder-Herring-L.S.Dogfish-Pouting-Shore Rockling-5 Bearded Rockling-Small Eyed Ray-Turbot-Whiting

Re: Question On Screw-on butt on new rod?? Thanks Scottish, Ive had a bit of a google dabble myself but not yet really managed to find anything as there isnt a good specific search term that doesnt pull up a bucket-load of other unrelated search results, so not had much luck yet. Wishes you better luck so you can put my mind at rest. :) Alex
