| reel up or down thinking about changing reel position to reel down. I'm getting some decent casts in over grass with the reel up....170yards with a 6500 and 150 yards with a torium with 3 brake blocks still engaged....(not bad for a rough ground reel). anyone else fish reel up regularly for 20 years and changed over and how long did it take to get used to it ond get over terrets!!! john __________________ 2012 targets - 180 yard measured cast, 10lb bull huss, 12lb blonde, 10lb hound, 8lb small eyed, spotted ray any size |

| Re: reel up or down Hi. Low reel position will allow you more time in the cast. You`ll find that you can slow the cast down and timing is slightly less critical also. |

| Re: reel up or down Hi John. I bought a Anyfish Anywhere 14ft match rod. I was about to sell it as I could not compress it, until the guy in West Bay tackle told me the only way to cast that rod is down the but. So like you I was a 20 year up the butt caster with a big hang up about going down the butt (this is starting to sound sordid lol). Anyway to cut the story short I took the plunge. Took me 3 casts to get the feel of it, after that it was an instant 30yds on my best ever cast. Wish I had done it years ago. I switched last November, and I have had the best Cod fishing this past winter, because I can cast that extra distance. It has also made a difference between catching the early Plaice that have arrived on Chesil this year. You need to be able to cast a proper 120yds with bait to get them, so thats around 200yds on grass. __________________ Check my blog for a daily fishing forecast from Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach & Kimmeridge Bay. www.fishingtails.co.uk |

![]() I've dabbled with both - no joke intended , and am still convinced down gives more control and a better cast ! __________________ Shore Species 2012: Dab-Flounder-Herring-L.S.Dogfish-Pouting-Shore Rockling-5 Bearded Rockling-Small Eyed Ray-Turbot-Whiting |

![]() I do agree, down the rod makes the cast slower giving you more time to think about your cast. __________________ Check my blog for a daily fishing forecast from Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach & Kimmeridge Bay. www.fishingtails.co.uk |

| Re: reel up or down Tried casting with the reel down but my timing was shot to s**t. Got fed up with picking out the birdies so went back to the high possition (nearly said it lol) . Now use F/S and a 15ft rod so don`t get that choice but if i switch back to multi I think I will try low again since you guys think it would be best Joe __________________ Sea 2012- 5brd rockling, whiting, LS Dogfish,Bass,Eel,Flounder F/W 2012- Catfish(16.5lb), Carp,Tench LITTER IS JUST LAZINESS!! |

| Re: reel up or down Im no veteran caster but learnt to use the reel in the convetional high position. I also recently decided to try the reel in the low position and found that after a few casts it was the norm and feels more natural. Definatly no more up the butt for me! |

| Re: reel up or down nope tried with the reel low a few times, it just feels damned cackhanded & my small girly lefthand just wont grip the spool. and of corse youve got no leaverage to pump those those huge fish ashore with the reel down, much easier to play fish with the reel high imho or p'raps i just like it up the butt ![]() __________________ beer so many venues, so little time. |

| Re: reel up or down I have the reel about foot from the end of the rod making sure there is enough rod to hold under my arm whilst reeling in, if it gets really hard going I wedge the rod in my stomach, abit like using a mangina! I use a 13ft rod so its like using a 12ft with the reel right at the end of the butt. I tried reel down awhile ago on a 12ft rod with a reducer and diddnt get on with it. It takes a little getting used to but it soon clicks and for me is the better position. Also when I take my push bike fishing it means I can mount the reel on the rod before i set out as the reel is over the back wheel instead of on the top tube. Saves a bit of time setting up and packing away. All the best. Jason |
