Braid or mono

Hi all. I'm in the process of refurbing all of my fishing kit. Iv'e played around with sea fishing for a few years now with some degree of success and a greater degree of disapointment, not a totally fair statement as just being out on the boat or sat on a beach or on the rocks with a flask is better than most other things i can think of. Catching is a bonus. Anyway it's now time to get some serious fishing in and more importantly "Understand what i'm doing".

First question then, do I restock my serviced reels, both multipliers and fixed spool with braid or mono. The more I read up in mags the more I get confused, or is it simply personal preference. I tend to use fixed spool from the beach and multiplier off the boat. Once I know what to go for its a case of what strength; I am not looking to go speciman hunting just yet. I would be happy to begin with just to start and understand the tides and feeding times and patterns.

Re: Braid or mono

Hello moga , your fine with putting braid on your eggbeaters mate , but not on your multis , it a very expensive way if you get nests and you will get more on a multi , however you will still need to put shockleader on your f/s reels if your using a high poundage braid

Re: Braid or mono

All down to personal preferance really ,i use mono from the beach and boat when uptiding .Braid on the boat when wrecking in deep water.

Re: Braid or mono

This is a question that would also depend on the type of fishing you do and the depth of water etc, my personal preference is braid rainging from 20lb to 50lb but on very rough days I always prefered nylon. Main differences that I see is that braid is very unforgiving but you can make errors with nylon and get away with it

Very true ,and also you can put pressure on a fish a bit more with mono ,without worrying as much about pulling the hook out

Re: Braid or mono

Hi cuckoo, I understand the nesting problem with long range casting with multiplier, thats why I've steered away from it, but what about multiplier off the edge of a boat will the risk of a nest lowering off a boat be outwayed by the extra sensitive bite detection.

Not at all mate , in fact you would probally get slated by the other anglers for using mono on a boat lol

Re: Braid or mono

if you go out on uptiding trips then i'd go for mono...braid breaks out the bottom too easy - and a bugger to cast with.

down tiding, wrecking i'd go for braid with a long25 foot rubbing leader.

braid off the beach on the fixed spools - again it would be down to the ground your fishing as braid isn't abrassive resistant like mono, it will weaken very quickly.

on clean ground yes it has some advantages...casting it again can cause problems - cut fingers!!!!!

Re: Braid or mono

My understanding of braid is that pound for pound (breaking strain) it is smaller in diameter than mono. Should I maintain my current diameter (mono) and increase breaking strain or maintain current breaking strain and decrease diameter and therefore drag in the tide.
