Hermit Crabs??

Since it`s looking like im partaking in the smutt meet this year can anyone suggest where i may be able to get some hermits from in kent???
If not in kent maybe i can get them from an online shop?? I think I would rather fresh ones though unless smutts will take frozen? Hmmmmm??

Having never caught one i not really sure what will work??? Thinking hermits, peeler and some king rag will do to get a

Anyone got any ideas

fresh or frozen hermit or peeler mate .. prices hit the roof once the smutts arrive as demand increases so expect to pay around 40p each for a herman and 80p for a peeler .. some peelers are the size of a 50p - others the size of your fist !
depending on location prices can be almost double this , tho normally it means they're taking the piss !

I wouldn't go near frozen hermits if i was you mate. the saft end of them tends to go to slush when defrosted.

frozen of fresh peeler or softies, fresh hermit or rag....up here we also use whole squid which can be productive too.

Well if frozen hermans will work as good as fresh i will try get some now. Was thinking about getting some peeler to to add to the variety. I can sort the peeler closer to the time but i never seen any hermans in my local shops so am a bit lost as where to get some, if fresh are better i`ll pay the price but don`t want to waste my money if theres not much in it

hard backs work well from the boat, don't know about the shore but maybe worth a try, good luck.

Small hardbacks.. i collected over 500 last meet and never had a sniff !! squid.. forget it.. rag .. forget it !
Frozen hermans accounted for dozens of smutts in broad daylight off West Beach so dont be put off..
fish 2 hermans or 1 with half a fresh peeler whipped together with bait elastic ...

local day boats ie potters are a great supply for kilos of fresh hermans if you ask around

I agree with Scottish and Mental that hard backs only work for one species and thats big Wrasse. I never have any luck with frozen peeler so I don't waste my money on them any more. Live Hermit outfish frozen 10-1, but a really god combo is hermit and peeler.

Right i think i will give the boats down at folkstone a shout then, i know there are hermans there cos they wash up on the beach on really blowy days so gotta be worth a shout

How about getting a small crab/fish trap ,bait it up with some stinky mackerel and peg it around the low water line ,see what you get the next tide....

OR you could get a canine crab hunter !!!!
