Making Weights!

Well after carrying a shed load of lead around from one place to another for years, I finally bought myself an Ajusti mould.

I did want the DCA one instead but I waited too long to get one and now the company looks like it’s gone to the wall.

So anyway, I knuckled down to a weekend making weights and have saved myself a packet as the mould makes leads from 3-9oz, I have now got two dozen each of 3, 4, 5oz weights.

OK that’s it…….I cant get anymore excited about it but it was one of those “I’ll get round to it” jobs done and I still have lead left.

Great stuff.

Kiwi.

Re: Making Weights!

Andy you can buy lead from a scrap metal dealer - or do what I did and get someone to pinch it for you

I got talking to a local wino who was always taking scrap metal to the local yard to get money for booze, and I just happened to ask if he ever got hold of lead For weeks he kept telling me "I'll have some tomorrow mate" Then one afternoon while I was out walking the dog,he comes up to me and says " I got that lead you wanted mate" So I go and take a look at what hes got and am greeted by a friggin mountain of the stuff I'm not kidding, there was over 100lbs of old plumbing pipes! Indded it was so heavy I had to go home and get my fishing trolley to move it.

Re: Making Weights!

Hi Marty,

There's a defiinite satisfaction in turning some 'scrap' into something really useful; well done.

Interesting that the Adjusti mould worked OK - were they with wires etc ?

I fancy making my own weights but can't find any suitable church roofs.

I'll have to go round Tyre centres for the old balance weights - used to do that 30 yrs ago for boat ballast.

Re: Making Weights!

Hey guys joking apart though the lead fumes (gases)are HIGHLY TOXIC and you should wear the appropriate mask. A normal dust mask is NOT siutable, You need a mask that will prevent fumes from entering your airway.I was a Health ans Saferty Manager for 4 years and know how DEADLY lead fumes can be.
Its not just the fumes either, its the Lead dust as well, always wash your hands before drinking or smoking as contamination will be directly transmitted to your digestive tract.Dont let an external HAZARD become an internal one.
LEAD IS A KILLER and poisons many people a year who are not aware of the Health and Safety implications.
Always have a good fresh air supply to disperse the fumes, wear protective gloves to protect from contact with the skin and also to prevent burns. And ALWAYS wear the CORRECT type of mask.

One little tip about the adjusty mould and any mould come to that... dont poor hot lead into it when it is cold!!! Always heat the mould before with a heat gun. This will insure the lead will run smoothly thoughout the entire length of the mould and also more inportantly wont crack the mould due to the shock of the extremely high temperature.

Happy weight making.. That reminds me, wheres mine gone?
