Re: Making Weights!

Oooooh Pixy did you type all that or was it a cut and paste job? I'm seriously impressed by your lengthy and informative reply. Making lead weights is a dangerous and perilous task and I'm now aware of the many dangers of making our own weights and will leave it to hubby's uncle(we get our lead from a mysterious source in hubby's work). The alcohol has well addled his brain already so I don't need to worry about any further damage!

Re: Making Weights!

Hi fishin widow,
I worked in HEALTH & SAFETY for some years so this stuff comes second nature, I bet some of the forum members didnt realise the dangers and consequences of lead and its effects.
Just to be accurate though some of the text was taken from H&S Data sheets.

I can remember years ago before I had an understanding of H&S how I used to make them.... I cringe now.

Cool Re: Making Weights!

Dear oh dear oh dear.......I made a few lead weights!! Take a chill pill for heavens sake.

Many of us including me appreciate being drawn to the safety aspect of dealing with molten lead. Instinct tells me it’s a risky thing to do but just as I would check both ways before crossing a road it doesn’t matter what I do there is always an element of risk to what I/we do.

It may seem strange to some but I don’t carry out a full risk assessment when I take my very dangerous motor vehicle into town. I don’t care what harmful gases it puts out and there is always the risk that I could knock someone down. If I considered these things before I drove, well, would any of us drive?

I also ask if everyone including you Nigel, follow all those points you made in that (I have to admit good, a little patronising but still good ) post?

Now if none of you mind Im gonna stick my pre made meal into the microwave and have a mug of freeze dried coffee…..oh heck is that safe or shall I do a risk assessment?

As always guys all said with tongue in cheek and no malice intended.

Kiwi.

Re: Making Weights!

Having seen video and images of accidents on various training courses I would put as many of these ppe's in place as resonably practicable.
I feel nowadays and I only speak about myself here, that there are too many risks in normal everyday life so why add to them by being careless or slap happy.
I have been fortunate in the work I have done in the past and been lucky to have had the necessary training courses to undersatand the risks in many different working environments.
Did you know there are more deaths and accidents in the home than in your place of work.
This is mainly due to people becoming blinkered in their relaxed atmosphear of there own home.

For instance a absolute classic example, Ive had a broken cover on the fuse board for over a year nearly exposing live wires, its taken me until yesturday to buy some glue to fix it, and I'm the one with the knowledge to know how dangerous it is!!! just image if your not so safety aware.
