daiwa 7ht or 7ht mag

before i go and buy one of these two, what is the difference in casting?

would the 7ht (black one) be able to cope with double or treble figure WEEDfish???

will be used over faily sandy beaches and beaches like chesil,

Re: daiwa 7ht or 7ht mag

Both ideal for the beaches you want to fish, the main difference is the 7ht mag has magnetic brakes which should give you more control during casting and less chance of a nest or a overrun. I believe the 7ht mag also has a slightly quicker retrieve.

With the monster weed fish you'd be much better off pumping them in with the rod rather than letting the reel take the strain.

Both me AND Rob caught a monster weed fish ladened with somewhere around 60 crabs !!

I was using a 7ht but as Rob points out you gotta pump and let the rod do the work

Re: daiwa 7ht or 7ht mag

Re: daiwa 7ht or 7ht mag

I suppose the less braking you have on your reel should mean less resistance and a further cast but any 7ht is a fine casting reel. You can adjust the braking to whatever you want on any multi, mine have none!

The only way to improve your distance really is to improve your casting technique.

Re: daiwa 7ht or 7ht mag

If you are looking to buy a multi thinking that it will immediately add mega distances to your casting then you are gonna be disapointed!
Firstly you need to understand that you will be "going back to school" for a while whilst you get to grips with your new reel and secondly you might want to consider not fishing at all for a little while with your reel whilst you just get used to casting and retrieving with it. Before you even make your first cast with it you need to ensure you understand the mechanics of casting with a multi, eg. how to keep the spool under control with your thumb in the build up to the cast, having the mags set on full resistance , initially, how and when to release the spool during the cast and how and when and why you break with your thumb during the cast and how to lay the line back on the spool with your finger whilst retrieving the line. These are all basic steps that you must understand even before you start using the reel even in a practice situation because believe me its a pain in the ass trying to learn how to use a multi whilst at the same time learning how hard it can be trying to unravel a birds nest!
Best thing to do really is to buy a decent reel in the first place, Abu, Daiwa and Penn make very good reels, and then get some one who knows how to use a multi to take you out and give you a practical training sesh.

People will say things like "start off with a cheap reel and see how you get on" which is not good advice at all! Cheap reels are cheap for a reason and they will not perform and neither will you!
Another mistake, in my opinion, is to do as I was told to do (but didnt) which is to go out and buy a bulk spool of cheap line and practice with that until you are confident/compitent enough to feel that you've gone some way along the road to mastering the multi. Cheap line wont in all likelyhood behave well on a multi so buy a decent line rather than an inferior one. Dont use a line with too fine a diameter/ breaking strain initially and you'll only need to fill the spool half way whilst you are learning as the less line you have on the reel the less likely you are to get over runs/birds nests, I would look at a line of 20lb bs as a starting point.
I started using multis a couple of years ago and bought a pair of Penn 525 mags, reels that I was told were "way to fast to learn with" but that is rubbish! They are not fast with the mags fully on! You might as well buy, within reason, the best reel that you can afford and learn how to use it and keep using it! Keep in mind that a reel which is designed to be used over a clean beach will not do the business over rough ground.
There's probably more that I could tell you but I've just woken up and my head is still in doze mode lol but good luck any way.

Re: daiwa 7ht or 7ht mag

excellent post above

for ease of use ,and simplicity stick to a mag reel..........so much easier to alter the breaking if needed.......

if your fishing involves lots of weed look at the penn mags, i hear the 525 mag 2 is a great bit of kit or the new abu 65oo tsr, the normal mag elites run into problems ..........eventually

all the reputable makes can be used for heavy weed situations, its just some do it better than others .......always make sure you pump heavy loads in reduceing the strain on the reel , and you !!

the only way to improve casting is practice , but only practice the right things ! check out a casting club in your area and pop along, dont be afraid to ask for a bit of help and advice.............an hour or two spent in the right company is priceless !!!

Re: daiwa 7ht or 7ht mag

I have several types of multiplier reels and find that the 7ht is by far the best apart from its annoying habit of warping spools which are not cheap to replace

i already have an abu 6500 mag elite and penn 525 mag extra perhaps i should have mentioend that earlier.

and i know about the braking and line laying etc...,just lookin at gettin another as my mag elite does struggle with weed alot! ,i know i won't get immediate distance it comes with practice.

cheers
