Complete novice

Well on the welcome page i did say i was a novice with plenty of questions so here goes.I live in the Canaries and fish in the Atlantic but at present seem to be only good at fish feeding and not catching lol.For example if i use baby squid i will cut a strip approx 25mm long and about 5mm wide.Hook one end and layer it back over itself until all is hooked.Although i get a few bites more often than not i seem to lose the bait.If i do get a bite and the float dissapears for a second or two i am never sure wheather i should be yanking it in to try and hook the fish. Also how do you work out depths or is this the fishing mystery that experience can only answer. Please dont get me wrong,i dont expect to cast and catch 100% but just a couple of times it would be nice to have something in the bucket.Excuse the inexperiance and thank you in advance for your comments.

Re: Complete novice

Sorry not to reply earlier but was on holiday in fuerteventura so havent been keeping up with posts. It seems that bread fished on the surface is the favourite bait for mullet bream and a type of fish i dont know. I also tried sardine at night and hooked into something unstopable. Aparantly arrams shop in calletta di fusta is the place for info. Which bit of the island are you on?
