Walmer Beach Monday Nov 1st Hello Folks!! This is my first post to this excellent and informative list which has been a great help to me, even though I have fished for some years. I play in the orchestra of "The Lion King" at the Lyceum Theatre, London and we do not have a show on Monday so this is usually my fishing trip day. Having been born in Deal, but now living in Greenwich, I usually fish Walmer Beach, Sandwich Bay and sometimes the pier. Enough intro!!! Just took delivery of Penn Powerstix 15ft 9in surfcaster and keen to try it out....brilliant! The ROD seems to do all of the work and, for a pathetic caster like me, is ideal. I already have the 11ft 6in Penn Pro Bass rod which I love and always catches fish ( whiting, doggies, eels, pouting...but no bass...yet!! ). It was because I love this rod that I thought about the long Penn beachcaster and I am not disappointed.....using Penn 850 FS reel. Beautiful clear, warm and starry night yesterday. HT at 1900 so fished from 1700 when almost dark. till after 10. 6 or 7 doggies LS and GS ( a first for me ) whiting and pouting but sadly no cod! Used lug and squid and a few small rag. Great session and perfect conditions. ADRIAN

Firstly welcome to the forum and thanks for taking the time to write a report. ![]() Secondly ( and more importantly lol ) My favourite film of all time is the Lion King and i would love to take the kids to see the production , but unlike you i'm too busy fishing to go to shows .. quite the opposite I could be persuaded to impart my expert knowledge for a back door pass to the Lyseum there again its probably not that much of a trade ![]() Steve __________________ Shore Species 2012: Dab-Flounder-Herring-L.S.Dogfish-Pouting-Shore Rockling-5 Bearded Rockling-Small Eyed Ray-Turbot-Whiting |

Re: Walmer Beach Monday Nov 1st Well I can't get you any free tickets!!! We used to get two complimentary ones each year but have not even had these for a few years as the show is packed out...2200 seat every performance. If you are able to take out a mortgage for tickets (!!!) then I would be pleased to show you backstage. The fishing is a relaxing hobby, with fresh air and quiet...and sometimes a few fish to take home...quite a contrast to the orchestra pit. It is nice to visit my old hometown of Deal too, where I served also in the Royal Marines Band Service and later as a professor. Fishermen are such NICE people...bit like musicians (!!!). Last night a had a crackoff and lost my shockleader on one rod and one of the other guys fishing just came over and offered me a new spool....and when the guys left they offered me their lugworm. Such kindness, consideration and generosity is sadly missing from so many walks of society today. Perhaps everyone should take up fishing and the world would be a better place....and cricket too!!

Re: Walmer Beach Monday Nov 1st Hope you have loaded 30lbs braid on the Penn 850. Sings (zings) off the spool compared to mono!

Re: Walmer Beach Monday Nov 1st Not tried braid on 850..yet!! I have used it on my Mitchell Avocet 2, which you may be surprised I use on my Penn bass rod. This reel/rod combo is VERY light but as it almost always catches fish why quit when you are winning!! When on the beach a few fellow fisherman have been so impressed with this light set-up they have decided to buy one themselves. You know what we are like...if we see someone catching fish when we are not we sometimes put it down to their gear...though I attribute their success to superior skills and knowledge which is why I love this forum. What is a reasonably priced braid I could put on the spare 850 spool?
