Braid

Hi

Im thinking of buying penn 515 and using braid on it. I have two Daiwa rods a sandstorm and a meanstreak. I was wondering if it would be ok to use braid with these rods or would I have to get a new rod as well?

I was thinking of using 20lb spiderwire braid with a 60lb mono leader. can anyone reccomend anything better?

I will be mostly pier fishing and sometimes there is a strong tide running so the low dia. would help to stop my gear from being dragged along the wall.

Thanks for any help.

Jason

Re: Braid

My brother used braid at one of our comps, dungey a few months back if memory serves me, he hated it, when he got home he reline his reels with mono, reckons it was utter poo, but hey his opinion only, personally never used braid and after his reaction i wont,,,,i guess its Adddy pier and breakwater you fish ?

Re: Braid

I have been going down the Eastern arm. I never noticed the tide was that strong there untill I went with Fisypaul the evening in a sw'ly 5 on the flood tide and it was really strong.

Thanks for the info though. I was toying with the idea of getting the 515v but it looks like it designed with braid in mind as its so small. They have them in Brasils of Dover now but are still waiting for the 525 mag 2. I might hold out and get one of them instead.

Thanks.

Jason

Re: Braid

Jason i have used braid off the pier before but see little point in using a low diameter braid then attaching 60lb mono to it !
bite detection is vastly improved but in all honesty 15lb mono shouldnt cause any problems with regards the tide..
It works on the boat because 30-40 lb mono diameter plus the overall depth mean a large bow in the line which is reduced vastly with say 28lb braid ..

Re: Braid

I see your point about the length of leader being effected by tide. The depth of water is about 15m where I fish. I was using 20lb mono with 60lb leader and casting a 7oz breakaway weight about 20 meters out, the tide was then sweeping my gear along the wall. I have changed my line to 15lb now but wondered if braid would make much differance. I want to get another reel for pier fishing as well and thought the 515 might be a good reel with braid.
Thanks
