| Penn 525 Mag, free spool/retrieve problem Hi, I've been experiencing a problem with my Penn 525 Mag, after casting when I move the free spool release lever back to it's retrieve mode position, it can take many turns of the handle to engage the mechanism, also while retrieving, the spool will jump back into a kind of free spool state but makes a series of clicking/knocking sounds as the spool rotates, I have to wiggle the handle and spool back and forth to get the reel to lock back to retrieve mode, I think it might be something to do with the clutch release/engage mechanism but not really sure, I would be grateful if anyone has an idea of what might be causing the problem. Thank you, Damian. |

| Re: Penn 525 Mag, free spool/retrieve problem Sounds like the same problem im having with my mag elite (see previous thread) , im lucky enough to have a bloke at work who has worked in modifying reels. He recons that this is a common problem with multi`s in general and is gonna open her up and take a look. Ill let you know what it was with mine and then you can see if its the same problem __________________ Sea 2012- 5brd rockling, whiting, LS Dogfish,Bass,Eel,Flounder F/W 2012- Catfish(16.5lb), Carp,Tench LITTER IS JUST LAZINESS!! |

| Re: Penn 525 Mag, free spool/retrieve problem As far as cleaning, I soak the reel in warm clean water to remove salt after each outing, then I spray wd 40 on it but only take the spool off occasionally to lightly oil, I never take it totally to bits, frightened incase it wont go back together, I will look up on how to correctly clean and look after it as it wasnt cheap and deserves better, but to be fair Ive only used it about 20 times since new and doesnt seem to be too dirty with sand in etc... |

| Re: Penn 525 Mag, free spool/retrieve problem how to open her up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFX_71Ah-Pw wd40 aint good for reels . better off using 3in 1 your problem is proberly a build up of sand , I wash mine out with lighter fuel , then let it evaporate , then change the oil& grease |

| Re: Penn 525 Mag, free spool/retrieve problem it looks like the pinion gear is a little worn on the end where it engages with the two lugs on the clutch plate, that could be causing the reel to slip into free spool, will replace both and see if it makes a difference. |

wd good water dispersant but not much good as lube , i use 3in1 in most of mine as the viscosity seeems about right for my casting __________________ beer so many venues, so little time. |

I know this prob sounds dumb but where exactly do you add the 3 in 1 and grease to the reels, i have used lighter fluid in the past for cleaning but am guilty of just spraying wd40 in the holes around the sideplates and into the gears. I usually take the spool and spindle out, then run all the parts under the tap to remove sand before adding the wd and putting it all back together again. I have only once undone the screws around the gearing and thats when i buggered the thing so leson learnt there but should i keep doing what im doing just replacing the wd for 3 in 1 and grease? I just got my reel back and was told i had a problem with a little component that was sprund loaded that had just popped outta place which was why it kept freelining and not engaging properly, at least thats what i am understanding the problem was if that helps drobson67? __________________ Sea 2012- 5brd rockling, whiting, LS Dogfish,Bass,Eel,Flounder F/W 2012- Catfish(16.5lb), Carp,Tench LITTER IS JUST LAZINESS!! |

| Re: Penn 525 Mag, free spool/retrieve problem The spool itself has two inboard bearings which are sensitive to oil viscosity. In addition to the two spool bearings the shaft also runs on bearings. One is under the domed nut below the star drag while the other is in the opposite end plate under the brass spacer.I use wd 3in one one the spool unless i want it to run faster then i use rocket oil I also put 3 in one one all the outer moving parts |
