| Help needed Been 'fishing' on and off since I was small boy and am now nearly 40, but never really taken time to learn real ins and outs of beach fishing. Whenever I go I always seem to blank. Don't know whether it's just the way things are, or whether it's lack of knowledge and dedication. Anyone recommend any books on best rigs and baits to use without getting overwhelmed? I normally fish around the Portsmouth and Hayling area and start just before high tide using mainly ragworm. I don't expect to catch a fish every time but one now and again would be nice - a bass would be really something special! |

| Re: Help needed Hi Russ, If you have a look on the web there are lots of sites, especially this one! that have rigs and bait advice. You could buy a few ready made rigs (quite cheap!) and try copying them? you only need a few bits of rig making kit to start. It's also worth asking any anglers what they use where you intend to fish, most are willing to help/chat about what works for them. Try not to make it complicated at first (I find it helps to remember KISS, keep it simple stupid!) As for bait, I think the basic ones are lug, rag, mackerel, squid, sandeel, shellfish and crab (peeler/soft). Most things in the sea are food for something else!!!!! Have a look through the threads on here for area's you intend to fish and see what others are using, if it works, and where you can get it! Fresh is best!!!!! Saying that, frozen can be a good substitute, if thats all you can get! Blanking is a fact of life sea fishing!!! boy do I know that!!!! What can help, is trying a few different baits, also vary the distance at which you cast out, I see loads of guys slinging lead to the horizon, when the fish can be right under your feet, especially bass! they can be right in the surf just in front of you! Best of luck! Let us know how you get on Steve |
