Cheers lads, all good answers. Enough to convince me fishing isn't cruel enough for me to stop without further evidence.

Re: The dreaded question - does fishing cause pain?

Yep. Got a treble stuck in my thumb - it hurt.
Also, its a pain when I dont catch anything

..but on a more serious note - On watching "Catching the Impossible" - it shows carp, barbel, tench etc picking up sharp stones, gravel etc, churning them around in their mouth for any food in amongst them, and spitting them out again, so I imagine their mouths dont feel pain, due to the mount of rocks, gravel, twigs etc they chew and spit back out.

Re: The dreaded question - does fishing cause pain?

i once read that they (the fish )feel some degree of pain but certain species do not i think it was bottom feeders they use there mouths to find food constantly grazing there mouths on the the rough river beds or commercials so the argument said that if they did feel pain this would cause major discomfort and they would feed as often.

also calling fish dumb is major misconception as it has been proven fish are rather intelligent creatures and can be trained to recognise there surroundings and obscacles in said environments they also know and can recognise different food items and distinguish between different flavours .

and yes fishing does hurt especially when you get a 3oz lead pull free and hit you in the head or a hook in the finger
