what bait for what fish!!! Just want a run down and what bait is best for what fish also want to know what other bait anglers use besides the conventional ones Have heard of bacon bits and the Mention of Orange peel for Congers - i know fish hunt by smell so what besides blood will get a fish going!!! i work in a Prawn factory and thinking of using Prawns-shell one, while have got a lot of Squid thats ready to cook squid tubes(skipper did say it was ok but lacked any scent/blood)ie like bland pasta, so what could i stuff it with with if i tried fishing with it whole(my thinking is the bait would sink down and the stuffing would disperse itself attracting the fish as u would with a carp feeder) and i talking crap or could herbs etc work!!!!

Re: what bait for what fish!!! Hi there, The question you ask is quite difficult to answer, generally fish tend to look for whats normally in the area, or expect in an area. Generally depending on the time of year and the seabed type. For example the smoothhounds tend to look for crab in the spring because they start to 'peel' at this time of year and they are plentiful. Crab is also a great bait for most species for the same reason during the spring/summer. Lug/rag are also great bait because it's available over the beaches, estuaries and harbours. Following a storm, razorfish can be a great bait because they get washed out and damaged, so the fish expect them to be there along with clams, mussels, cockles etc. I suppose the scent would be in the water too. ANY angler will have an opinion on what bait fishes best for certain species, there are plenty of threads on here regarding baits for area's and species. 'Matching the hatch' I think they call it!!!! I guess from your thread your talking about a boat trip? Do you know what type of fish you'll be targeting? where and over what type of ground you'll be? If I didn't know, I'd guess at taking a mixture of bait, lug, mackerel, soft/peeler crab frozen if fresh not available. As for stuffed squid I read an article on it once, I think the 'tube' was filled with a mixture of lug and fish (mackerel, sandeel, etc) and pierced with a point of a knife several times, this was then hooked pennel style top and bottom to 'release' in the water....... never tried it though!!! LOL!!!! Strips of squid are great added to tip off other baits as they add a bit of movement and colour. I like squid with garlic an chilli, not sure about fish though!!!!!! But then what the h*ll do I know! Hope it helps Steve

Re: what bait for what fish!!! Great advise mate cheers- we use a paparika glaze on prawns so i might maridande the squid tubes and fill it with what you said. we fish out of weymouth- and last trip we fished west end so did a 24 mile round trip taking in reff-sandbanks- wrek - general drift fishing with plain quid tubes mackerel and ragworm. so hook size- to me at the moment is hazy- we just been using the boat rods and reels and rigs already set to just drop over the side- is ir small hooks for small fish and big ones with loads of bait for cod and conger!!!! there is a lot of forums on here yet alot of reading and learning by youself is much easier if a seasoned pro can show u in five minutes!!!

Re: what bait for what fish!!! Hey there's a couple of websites that give a bit of info on hook sizes and baits, it's worth having a look at some.. I think Alan Yates from sea angler mag does some informative stuff... worth a look... I would ask the skipper what he recommends, whats been caught etc!!! Best of luck

Re: what bait for what fish!!! When I went for fisihing in Turkey, couple of people mentioned slightly salted chicken cubes as bait. Apperantly see bass loves it. Have you heard of this theory? They swear for the success of the bait. Also in Turkey we use a lot of bread as bait for fishes like grey mullet etc. Even some people mixes the bread with egg white to give firmness, so bait does not go away easy. Would you use bread as bait for bass or mackrel etc?
