New Fishing Spot

Some years ago I was out on my mountain bike riding from St. Mary's beach to Berry Head in Brixham , Devon.
I came across this rocky outcrop and decided to have a closer look. I can remember thinking back then that it would be a great place to wet a line...
Anyway that was some years ago now, but today i decided to go back and check it out again.
The pinicle of flat rock is exposed at high water but cut off by the tide, it is still fishable from a higher point but would need a drop net to land a good size fish.
The water is quite deep and I guess at around the 30-40ft as I've fished nearby from a boat. The scenery is quite breath taking with steep cliffs and a fantastic view around the coast, I will let you all know what it produces in a few days time when the weather settles down a bit but can imagine some big wrasse and nice Pollock should be on the menu.
If anyone wants to join me on the first trip please let me know cos it aint really a place you want to fish alone cos its a bit out the way.You can e-mail me direct on pixybasher@aol.com

Re: New Fishing Spot

Hi wellyfish,
If you stand on the beach and look to your left you can see the pinicle 'im on about. The flat rocks are always visable and I think you could probably fish on them when the tide is in but you would be cut off, so not a good idea.Like I said in the initial report you can fish on a higher point but you would need a drop net, I've fished this area from a boat af ew times and had some really good results so 'im gonna try in a couple of days. Lets get this wind out the way first then its game on.
My neigbour caught a 6 1/2lb lobster from sharkham point last year, the thing was a beast.

Re: New Fishing Spot

Hi Pixy
Thats my old ground yur at.....
If you stand on the beach, now called St.Marys but Mudstone flats on charts
Sharkham is to your right and Berry Head your left.
The flats you refer to sounds like what we always called 'South Side' i.e. Berry Head South Side.
I would never fish it on my own,
1. The grassy path is trecherous slippy
2. In a SWerly you get big swells out of the blue
3. Big ships in Lyme Bay put rougue swells in there any time

We used to take conger at night, pollack, wrasse and dogs.
Usual Mackeral. Gar and stuff in summer.
Used to be a run of black bream early summer but heard nought on that for a few years.
I am going back abit before modern techniques.
If i still had the legs i would get down there with light spinning gear toby's and plugs, dawn or sunset.
The path down is hidden in gorse about halfway along from the car park to the fort.
If your at Sharkham you can spot the path with binocs.
Did Sharkham a couple of times in Summer , only mackeral and dogs.

Re: New Fishing Spot

Hi Brixhamgazza,

Its not quite the South Side cos I know that place very well, its between there and St' Mary's beach. I might go there tomorrow (weather permitting) and take some pics so you know exactly where I mean. Below is (hopefuly) a pic of the south side. the location I mean is the fat left of the picture.

Re: New Fishing Spot

Hi Simon,
I took some pics today of the new spot, I fished it this morning but I didnt have a sniff, typical aint it!!
however the water was very cloudy so I'll put it down to that.

I'll e-mail them to you with some kind of report so you can add it to the PLACES TO FISH page. Or maybe not as the case may be.
