Mediterranean fishing

Dear All,

Going to camp site near Nice in August. Any ideas of tackle, bait and tactics and what I would be likely to catch. Is day or night better. We will be flying so all existing beach casting and spinning rods will have to stay at home and l'll buy telescopic rods either here or on the holiday. Has anyone any recommendations regarding the rods I might need. Please bear in mind I will have to kit out me and my two boys ages 11 and 8 and my brother will need to kit out himself and his daughter. Therefore costs need to be, let's say, cheap as chips. By the way I will be taking a good selection of rigs, weights and lures plus other goodies from the tackle box.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Mediterranean fishing

Hi Bonsai,

Welcome to the forum, do I recognise your name from somewhere else???

The Froggy super/hyper markets are full of cheap fishing rods and accessories. Their prices are well below ours. There are so many of them on the way down i.e. if you are driving, so don't be dispondant if you don't see what you want in the first one that you go into. Obviously the hypers are better than the supers, better range.

Which route are you taking?

Cheers

Re: Mediterranean fishing

Hi Bonsai,

Tas jim is right buy stuff when there. You will be amazed how cheap fishing gear is, by the selection of gear in the hypermarkets you will be able to judge what sort of fishing takes place in the local area. Most years I buy new outfits for under a tenner so just leave them behind if driving.
Stand close to a guy already fishing and watch! Fishermen all round the world are a super bunch of people and will always help each other, possibly help if you speak a little french.
Lure fishing is more widespread abroad, keeping bait fresh in real heat is not easy. So do take a selection of spinners and plugs, (they're small, light and it saves a few pennies). Off rocks there are big mullet and mackerel to die for.....don't put your fingers near their mouths! Take long nose pliers or big forceps. If you don't recognise a fish you catch, remember there are stone fish (deadly) and fish often have defences, use a cloth to hold and be careful.

Most important, go fishin....and have a super time, remember to take pics and post em up when you come back.

Regards, Jules

Re: Mediterranean fishing

Thanks for the replies guys.

I did go to Brittany last year and caught some Greenish Wrasse, small Bass, a Conger, about three foot long and a fair amount of what we believed to be Pollock up to about 1.5lbs. We kept two of the biggest to cook back at the camp but ran out of time so ended up giving them to bloke on the site who said he was going to grill them with cheese. An interesting choice I thought especially as we later discovered that the Pollock were in fact Pouting. I haven't been fishing long.

Most of the fishing we did on that holiday was from harbour walls that were populated with locals in family groups from Gran and Grandad down to the five and six year old grandkids, who were all fishing, up to ten of them in little groups. They were fishing with small poles with no reels and a hook length tied to the end with a float and tiny hook. Never seen this before. Anyway they were catching lots of small, anything up to 4oz, Pouting I think and putting everything into a large bucket. I saw one group close to me who caught at least 50 and took them all home. I did ask one woman who spoke decent English what they made from them, and she said a soup with tomtoes. Every Brit I have spoken to says Pouting are inedible so I have not tried one, but can they be eaten, and if so how should you cook them?

And what about the other stuff I caught at Selsey last Thurday evening, 5 Rockling to 4oz, 2 Pouting to 1lb, 1 Whiting 4oz it swallowed the hook so I hope it survived and 1 Scorpion fish 1oz, barely bigger than the hook. Can any of that lot be eaten, I know about Whiting and have a few in the freezer. But do the others just taste too vile.

Sorry it's a bit long but I have lots to learn and a thirst for the knowledge.

Tasmanian Jim I have posted on another sea fishing forum so you may have seen my name there.

Re: Mediterranean fishing

Allright mate,

Ya must of caught me dozing there, im the bloke in Greece.

To be honest i think you've cracked it dude, cheap and cheerful kit, a great day out in the sun with a few fish fer supper. Sorted

One thing to consider i've not seen anyone mention, why bother with rods, you'll see no end of folks with a spool of line a 3 hook flapper with small hooks size 6ish and a shocking great lead weight, spin the weight around like a lassoo and away ya go.

If im having a slow day i usually chuck one of these in, stick the spoool in the sand and when it falls over hey presto a bite, some days i've caught more with the spool than with me rods yikkeesssss!!!!!

As fer bait get some frozen shrimps, squid, crab octopus etc, sprinkle a bit of sugar on top (stop laughing Dell boy) don't worry about leaving it out in the sun, the fish here seem to take it better after a couple of hours festering in the sun.

It don't seem to matter too much about distance casting in summer as the fish seem to come in to the warmer shore, and keep ya baits really small about 1 cm'ish then work up to bigger baits if ya feel the need.

Cheers Mark.
