Degraded line???

Hi all on my last fishing trip (which i blanked) on my first cast on my 1st reel my line snapped, i assumed it was at the shock leader knot but when i was checking my line is was grany and felt lumpy, i could even snap it with my bare hands. Its been on my reel for around 3 months which has amounted to around 10 fishing trips. The reel holds around 350 yards so i started taking some line off but i was the same for easily 200 yards? the line is 15lb red ice which i bought as its cheap enough. I havent bought new line yet so advice on what to get and what happend to the line in the first place would be appreciated. Cheers neil

Re: Degraded line???

Line can be weakened by bright sunlight and abraision from sand and shingle. It pays to check and change it regularly depending on where and how long your fish for. I know some change it every two or three sessions! Might also be worth checking the eyes of your rod for chips as this will really damage your line.

Red ice seems to be the marmite of fishing line, you either love it or hate it! Im in the love camp, think it's a great line for the price.

Re: Degraded line???

I've had this problem as well mate. I've swapped to Ultima F1 Tournament Line which is more money but far stronger and better quality. Ends up being about the same price as you won't have to change your line so much as well.

Another tip is to not put 350yds of new line onto your spool. Try leaving 100yds of old line on the reel and then attach your new line to that. How many times do you ever get down to the end of the spool on a fixed spool reel....?

Hope this helps mate, and saves you some time and money in the long run.

Re: Degraded line???

i have had a few broblems with it myself , but what i tend to do is fill the spool right up then when it starts to look a bit rough ,i just wind it on to a spare spool good line on top and a way you go ,

i do back out with old line first

Re: Degraded line???

Hi Teddytench Here, I change my lines at the start of every season, and use Diawa sensor which i have used for years,i buy a ball wool from the charity shop and fill all of my reels up half way with wool, the rest of the reel with what ever breaking strain line your useing, i use up to 15lb breaking strain,i find by useing this method i dont get a lot of wasted line,( So saving money which cant be bad Tight Lines Teedytench.
