Cod worms question

Hi I read an article the other day regarding Cod farming and found some information to concern me a little. It was about 'parasitic worms' found in wild-caught cod. They said that Icelanders don't even eat what they catch due to these and they have to be taken out in processing by fishermen.

Questions are:

how can I tell that a Cod has a 'parasitic worm'?
How do you remove it?

The paragraph is below, can anyone shed some light on this for me.

"Another advantage, the brothers say, is that farmed cod is free of the parasitic worms found in wild-caught cod, which have to be removed in processing (and which, ironically, discourage the Icelanders, among the world's biggest cod fishermen, from eating the fish themselves."

On a better note, good to see that cod farming is growing each year, lets hope we can one day put back some fish!

Re: Cod worms question

Fresh sea caught cod can have parasitic worms in their abdominal cavity ,easily removed by washing out the cavity after gutting, nothing more than that really, and even if you dont get em ,i`m sure once cooked there harmless to man !

Some good info can be found here ........

Re: Cod worms question

Ah wormy Cod, the main reason you won't get cod in a Hull or Grimsby chippy.
They won't hurt you but they do put you off a bit, i caught a few cod in Norway a couple of years ago that were riddled.
Remember-Cods for sellin Haddocks for eating

A lot of the wormed Cod i've seen have had coiled up worms through the flesh, it does put you off a bit.
I usually give these fish away to friends
