Question Lumpsucker

Has anyone on the Forum ever caught a Lumpsucker?
As I kid, this was the one fish in my Observers book of british sea fishes that really caught my imagination. Not sure why. Probably because it's so ugly. I spent many happy holiday hours fishing the rockpools, piers & beaches of Dorset, Devon & Cornwall trying for one with a trusty old solid fibreglass woolworths rod & reel. And after nearly 48 years of fishing, i've yet to catch one or see one caught. I was suprised to hear just how large they get. The british shore record was caught from Swanage peir & weighed over 20lb.

Re: Lumpsucker

Not even heard of one of them, but was in a local book shop where I spied a pocket book on Fishes of the UK, not sure of the title, some thing like British Freshwater Fishes, and there was a page on the Burbot, which means that the book was well researched, or has the burbot made a comeback/been reintroduced?

I did see something in the Angling times a while back about an experiment to try & re-introduce Burbot using stock fish from Europe. Not heard much about it since though.

Re: Lumpsucker

A single Lumpsucker came second in the Allan's Marine Open, Southsea, Hants some 15 years ago. It weighed just over 4lbs.

fishingforscotland is on a distinguished road
Re: Lumpsucker

the lumpsucker would be a very very difficult species to target as they live mainly in depths 100m plus near continental shelves but sure wld be a thrill for you or any1 to catch 1

Re: Lumpsucker

Can remember in the early 1990's there was a good sized lumpsucker caught off Worthing Pier. Every year we find a few washed up dead on the beaches around here during the winter and spring.
