abu 6500 gear upgrade

looking at doing a bit of playing around with my 6500c3ct mag elite. (green one)

great reel but a bit slow on the retrieve, casts really well though so i don't want the expense of going out and buying a faster retrieve reel.

to change the gear ratio to get it a faster retrieve is it just a case of going out and buying a new main and pinion gear????

Re: abu 6500 gear upgrade

If off the beach your reel should be fine, you have a few options. You can sell reel and buy the high speed but off the shore not really a big gain. Or buy high speed and TRY and see if gears fit/ dodgy but not worth it. If it was me i would keep what you have or sell it and buy a 7ht casts a dream and super fast retrieve mate. Thats it really/ Thats my input and my casting instructors. His pb with a 150g lead is 307 yards with 0.35 line on court and he knows a thing or two about rods and reels, owesome guy. Hope this helps. Penn reels are also very good shore reels for casting and retrieving. Paul

Re: abu 6500 gear upgrade

Great advice, only snag it says with this upgrade the clicker wont work. Anyway your reel your choice mate, personally the gains or tiny, plus i dont like the idea clicker wont work. Tight lines. Either way good look with it. Paul

Mick i agree with you mate 100% mate but compared to what he has got 6.3.1 is not a big gain really. 7ht is 5.2.1 and its high speed, the gains are very small. But as you say if it works try it and see. Tight lines mick, roll on the summer mate luvly jubbly. Paul

Re: abu 6500 gear upgrade

Right sorted

1st off there is no clicker on a c3ct mag elite...so to loose it????????

2nd...won't do much???? increasing from 5.3:1 to 6.3:1 is a hefty 18% increase in line retrieval.......that i can go for.

most of the fishing round here isn't your nice clean beaches...its broken ground but not rough so getting the gear off the bottom is a distinct advantage!!!

i'll give wozza...or warren from Keens tackle a call in the morning...who makes some of the fastest reels for alot of the countries top casters..especially the surfcast wales guys and pick his brains too...as incidently was told they sell the gear and pinion for about £12 or £13.

cheers for the link mike...might have to go bling mad...might even for a bit of fun look for an qtc cage and really chav it up!!!

Re: abu 6500 gear upgrade

Ist it says on advert which mike deleted from post but i got in quick and saw it. It did say on only on ct reels you WILL loose it so i only wrote what i read on post and your reel is a ct. 2nd you are wrecking a good reel. For shore fishing i would be thinking of the gears and not just the retrieve. I did agree with mike 100% so why the big man act. In the ground your fishing by the way i wouldnt be useing a 6500ct anyway mate its for clean ground. As i said penn are great reels to and would be my 1st choice.
