| its very true but i have worked on trawlers off and on since i was 13, and the fact is that all fisherman care about is making money from fish, but the problem lies with the european fleet ie french and spanish boats who are quite happy to come into our waters and just wipe out fish stocks, it is a known fact that there are no more cod left in canada due to overfishing and factory ships!! and the problem will get worse in years to come if we dont make a stand now to conserve what fish stocks we have left !!! the knock on effect from this could be that we have no big fish left in our seas because nobody is prepared to make a stand against the problem we have of overfishing!! everybody feels that eventually the fishing industry will be taken over by the european fleet, its absolutely disgusting, and the problem started when britain signed up to the EU, theyve had all these years to try and get things right in fishing, but it has had the total opposite effect in fact , having closed periods/bigger meshes in trawls may help to conserve fish stocks but in reality it probably wont happen, decommisioning boats doesnt seem to make 1 bit of difference either !! cause there are new ones being built all the time and the technology now being used to catch fish is amazing !! maybe its all just come a bit too far ?! but bottom line is.. unless we make a stand now its future generations who will lose out in everything !! the fish will be gone.. forever, and where does that leave the worlds fish ??!! it will be non existent !! no more fish to be eaten !! not good at all !! i wish some people would just see how much of a problem this is and we need to act now !! not in 5 years not in 10 , but right now !!!!!!!!!!!! |

| Re: Trawlers I tryed to find a mark this weekend just gone, I thought my gps was playing up and put me on the wrong spot, I zig zagged up and down and then short figures of eights, but could not find any pinacles of rock that appear quite high on the echo sounder, for those of you who do not know what an echo sounder is , it is an device for looking at the sea bed, smooth and flat you can say is sand, bumpy...mussel ground, and peaks, usually rocks, I actually went inshore to two boats at anchor to enquire what type/mark they were on? Believing i was on the wrong gps location, turns out they had been watching me and said" a scottish trawler had concentrated on this mark with such intensity that the beam trawler had smashed the rocks and flattened the area. I must admit it was one of the few area's my boat can get to on a calm day and have probably some of the best sport around, so deeply upset, even more upset a trawler has to travel so far for a catch. Having said that, it may well be that it was not scottish as such, the boat could have been purchased by euro's and still bears the name, i say this because i was in the lock later that day and a little trawler boat with two fisherman on board could not speak a word of english! a typical english named boat too! ![]() |
