Jim, don't know the UK figures or the last 50 years, but in 1994 90,000 tons of cod was taken from the North Sea and in 2004 10,000 tons was taken. Only a small amount of that drop off is due to a shrinking UK fleet. The REAL reason is stock loss. Cod stocks are at 30% of what they need to be to maintain their survival.

F*****g hell, what were the EU thinking!!!

Re: New EU fishing quotas announced

Downsouth, you're dead right mate... but on a another note, I don't care if a million tons (well I do really!...??) were taken, if a species is close to extinction, which I read some where that cod are very, very close to being totally wiped out, I believe they should be left alone COMMERCIALLY.

Lets get this straight, rod and line ANGLERS, do NOT affect stocks! FACT.

Commercial hunting of a species DOES! FACT.

If it was a bloody butterfly, or snail, or some hedge hobbit that lives under a log in Dingly bloody Dell, (not that I have anything at all against the fore mentioned - much) then we would all be banned from going anywhere near these places, in fear we might plight the future of such creatures. All the goody do-gooders will be up in arms, but nobody gives a sh*t when it comes to fish! WHY IS THAT ??? Anglers themselves do MORE than anyone when conservation is mentioned. Most of us keep our beaches clean, look after our angling environment, and above all else, we like to look after our FISH! When I say look after I mean, if it's gonna be eaten, it's killed immediately. If not, it's unhooked, CAREFULLY, and returned CAREFULLY. Nuff said.

THERE SHOULD BE A TOTAL BAN ON COMMERCIAL FISHING IN ALL AREAS UNTIL STOCKS ARE REPLENISHED.

WHEN THE SEAS ARE EMPTIED IT WILL BE NO ONE ELSE'S FAULT BUT GOVERNMENT AND COMMERCIAL 'FISHERMAN' - IT MAY NOT MATTER TO THEM NOW - BUT WHEN WILL IT MATTER ???

Re: New EU fishing quotas announced

Wow

Highly charged thread.....

I really hope someone with some clout reads it and realises how us sport fishermen feel about the stocks of our endangered and beloved fish.

Now is the time to do something about it not next year after the holiday.

i fish close to a no fishing nursery area and take maybe 2 or 3 Bass every couple of weeks in the hot(?) season, but am amazed at the netsmen covering the whole estuary every day? So whats the point of the nursery area if all the fish are netted on the way out?

I'm as incensed as you guys.

Don't understand, Jules.
