Re: Hook Snoods.

Baggierich was spot on, i see what you mean now in your question, leader knot is week link, but if tied the way i showed you and you bully the fish you should be fine, i have never had a snap off from sh/leader knot. Always keep your two eyes focused on rod and dont let it sit to long after you see the bite, to answer your question in one Shockleader knot will go 1st mate. Sorry if i seemed pushy, to show you in person 1 min tops. Practice knot i showed you. Tight lines. Paul

Re: Hook Snoods.

No problem Paul :) For tying my shockleader to my mainline i use the albright knot which seems to be a very strong knot. What i dont understand then is why do we use low breaking strain snoods to connect our hooks? what is the advantage of using say a 15lb snood rather than a 30lb snood or higher?

Tight Lines.

Re: Hook Snoods.

Your asking the right questions, and you will catch fish as bar rod reel line etc its all the other stuff that matters, and snoods is one of them a big one i learnt that at the masters a good few years ago. It depends what fish your after and the movement of the tide ie short snoods if its calm and long snoods if there is good movement in the water, and hook sizes. Short snoods 8-12", long snoods anything up to 3 foot long. There is so much to learn and its all these other things that make a difference. Allbright knot to me is too thick but if your happy with it thats fine, i use it to tie fly line to backing, but for shore rock and boat i use the one i mentioned. Has landed skate nearly 200lb thats how strong it is. Night time fishing say dogs, rays i would use 25-30lb flatties 10-15lb. Tight lines mate. Paul

Re: Hook Snoods.

ah its all begining to make abit more sense now :) . what pound mainline and shockleader do you use if you dont mind me asking?

So what is the purpose of having light or heavy snoods why is it not suggested that you just use for example 60lb rig body and 60lb snood lengths?

Thanks paul :)

Tight lines.

Re: Hook Snoods.

The lighter snoods present the baits in a more natural way and are harder for wary fish to spot. I used Amnesia almost exclusively for snoods as it has low memory (Hence the name!). This means it doesn't coil or kink as easily as other mono's.

Of course, it totaly depend on what you're fishing for as to the breaking strain of the snood. 15lb snoods presnt a bait nicely for flatties, but you wouldn't want to hook a conger on the stuff as it'd be like a hot knife through butter. Then again 100lb mono isn't going to have enough finesse to present a bait for a flatties.

Personally, I use 15lb for flatties and 25lb for pretty much most other things. Some of the bigger smuts and certainly congers might give you a problem with 25lb, but for most other things it should be fine.

Re: Hook Snoods.

Ah i see so now am i correct in thinking that the breaking strain of the snood is down to presentation of the bait and obviously strength for the species you are fishing for and not at all for when you snag up?

Thanks

Hooked into a bass last year , high single low double it had quite a few hooks snoods hanging from its gob where it had snapped anglers off , and it done exactly the same to me would have been nice to get it up and remove hooks before releasing

Re: Hook Snoods.

Off casting with club this morning, hope for a pb. I have seen same happen with rainbows due to to light off leader, it has never happened to me from the shore or rocks but it happens due to a few things. Weak knots on swivels, not pumping bulling the fish and getting it up on top off the water with the right rod, fish swims in and snood gets cut off on say a rock, or slack line, can happen but that i would say was a one off lee and i feel for you the one that got away. And guys when tying traces DONT over tighten crimps, ive seen a guy loose a good fish from the shore. Lee any ideas your end. I still cant get over the size off that bass you caught, owesome fish mate a life time catch. Chow. Paul.
