Hook Sizes

Can someone explain sea fishing hook sizes. Coarse fishing starts at number 2 (biggest) up to size 24 (smallest) Whats the difference between a size 1 and a 1/0 ? Is there a scale of hook sizes like in coarse fishing?

Re: Hook Sizes

hook sizes again similar to course as in 1 is biggest then down to maybe a 6 if sole or bream fishing
other scale they go up from 1/0 then 2/0
biggest i use from shore is a 4/0 when targeting ray or big bass with whole squid
2/0 good size for sandeel
1/0 good worm size
hope that helped

Re: Hook Sizes

A size 3/0 is marginally bigger and the scale generally goes like the freshwater hook scale i.e the larger the number the smaller the hook ( smallest shore hook generally used is a size 4 or 6 ) upto 12/0 o'shaughnesseys for skate fishing from the boat.
Another point worth remembering is that different manufacturers use the same scale but a 2/0 mustad bln worm hook looks nothing like a 2/0 aberdeen and kamasan hooks can vary in size from other brands even though they may both be marked as 2/0 .

Shank length and hook gape can vary hugely as can the 'wire' of a hook i.e its length, width and thickness of metal so depending what yer after there is a hook for every single job !

Veals M.O do a 3/0 Saltwater champion all round shore hook which is amazingly sharp and uber strong , also available in smaller sizes that are suitable for worm or fish baits and a Varivas 'wide mouth' great for crab baits and my favourite for shads and jellyworms when Pollack fishing on the wrecks..

Hows Peckham anyway ? not been there to see the family for a while ( im sure there was a murder outside the house lol ) ..
