Re: cod

HI BAKER BOY,

cod are not showing in huge numbers this year like they did last year, however the ones that are being landed at the mo are clonking fish, langley in eastbourne seems to be producing the most consistant catches, trevor rooney pulled a 12lb one out in daylight last sunday 20/12/09, also over pevensy way ie billys tower is always worth a go, although a little bit late in the season but you never know, seaford is your best bet for dec jan time, to the left up at the martello is a good spot on the high tide but can be snaggy due to mussel beds out there, edingburgh road and the hump to the right is a good spot the hump yet again can be a bit snaggy though. also opposite beach comber car park is a fantastic spot also the hole (from flag pole left of pub up to where the old bus shelter used to be) this can catch although the best time for these in over low and from high tide down, i fished the beachcomber last sat and caught a 9lb 6oz cod from there. i advise the best rigs to use are 3 hook clip down or portsmouth (millenium with stong wired1/0 worm holding hooks, all the cod i have ever caught from these areas have always been on these rigs, i do always put a pennell / pulley pennel out on a second rod just in case, bait to use really is just fresh black lug or fresh outs(un gutted black lug ) with the option of squid or cuttle fish, but both will work you can get fresh outs to order if you speak to glenn at the den in pevensy. hope this helps you.

I wudnt advice 3 hook millenium for cod and i doubt you use it or have ever used it mate. I will tell you why cod are 6lb plus and i wouldnt fancy getting 3 fish that size and trying to haul them in of the beach. For codling yes ray yes doggies yes cod no. I would use 2 hook pulley pennel
or 2 hook pennel for cod with big baits and the same goes for big bass. You use 2 rods and say pennell/pulley out just in case/ in case of what kev. 3 hook millenium has 3 hooks one on each snood and 2 hooks on pennel and thats to hold fish big cod etc. Trawlers have the beaches ruined over many years and i mean ruined cleaned it all up. Happy christmas. Im not saying rig wont catch a cod it will, but thats not a cod rig and thats not what it was made for.

Re: cod

No worries. If your fishing off the rocks 2 hook pulley pennel, if off the beach with no major weed 2 hook pennel i use both of the beach it dosnt really matter mate, but of the rocks 2 hook pully penell only, other rigs in rock marks will be snagged and lost. Hooks use 1/0 main hook and size 1 as 2nd as pennel. Only snag i dont know your mark ie never fished it, thats up to you kev bud keep casting till you find them. One tip for casting get a conned fixspool reel say a leeda 7500 pirrana, there is a chap in our club and he can cast it with 0.35mm line 254 yrds so let the rod do the work punch and pull at the end of it. Cod can be 40yrds out and they can be 150+yrds out. You have to find them mate. Merry christmas mate. Paul

Re: cod

hi stud.
just a quick reply on your reply to my previous comments.

i do use the portsmouth 3 hook rig and probably been making them for about 10 years now, i got the design from within the match fishing fraternaty when i used to be more competitive. i think it is the same as millenium just a different name but not 100% sure.

i totally agree with your comments on the pulley and fixed pennell rigs although the pulley rigs were primarily designed for snaggy ground so as to raise the weight when you have fish on, but i am sure you already realise this.

the reason i use the portsmouth rig on this occasion is that the average size cod/codling in the seaford and surrounding areas are 3 -4 lb so going too heavy duty with a big bait on a pennell rig at seaford would be a hit or miss situation, being that with the trawlers killing it for beach anglers the cod stocks are in a very sorry state, never seen three codling caught on the same trace in this neck of the woods, shoals are not plentifull enough,

in my opinion in this situation the best policy is bait scent and three medium sized baits will generally out fish 1 big bait at seaford , hence why 90% of match anglers use them.

baker boy was asking about local cod reports in this this area and not in general.

normally i would never disagree with anyone on the performance quality of the pennell / pulley rigs. but at seaford i do know a little bit about the venue and have fished it for over 25 years, any other venue then i would not have the experience to have these views,

but unless you fish the snaggy parts of seaford then i personaly wouldnt feel the need to. even then you could use rotten bottom.

ive had codling to 16lb and bass to 13lb on these rigs and never had a problem bringing them in at seaford, mind you that was when you could guarantee to catch on each visit, those were the days.

the other good thing about these rigs are they allow you to catch all species and i know whiting can be a pain but as you know the cod are usually in amongst them all be in small numbers. and it still keeps you busy, rather than standing around for hours with nought happening.

this is why i always put out a pulley on the other rod with big bait on , that way i have a cod bait on but i am always catching fish.

this is only my own personal opinion which i know some people are going to disagree with, fished prob 10 yrs with portsmouth at seaford , not every week mind you but i have never blanked there so i would reckomend it to any one new to fishing or wants to catch fish in general rather than just waiting for the big one,
have a great christmas and new year.

tight lines.
kev.
