Question Hooking squid

Probaly going out next weekend, and seeing as the cod seem to be moving in, i was wondering how to hook squid so it looks best on the hook.

I normally just put it through the middle then slide it up slightly then back through again, and it generally just flops down and looks pathetic.

So any help please?

Dan,

I've found the key is a pennell for squid ... you can do what you normally do and just put the higher hook once through the top of the squid body, bottom hook through its head.

I've reeled 'em in looking good enough to stick it straight out again - you could try adding some thread if you think you need it, but you shouldn't!

Cheers,
JB.

Re: Hooking squid

i always use pennel
bottom hook through the body n out of the head (through the eyes) and top hook once through the top
i usualy put afew wraps of elastic on as well to hook the head in place properly
a trick which i was shown boat fishing once was to do what i said with the bottom hook and then make a loop of line n loop it around the tail rahter than using 2 hooks, seemed to work but that wasnt for casting

Re: Hooking squid

i use the same method as 'john-boy' but three hooks so that you get two squid in a line

bottom hook throught the eyes of the first squid

2nd hook though the hood of the first squid and then through the eyes of the second squid

3rd hook through the hood of the second squid.

hope this info helps you.

Re: Hooking squid

I've just bought some frozen 'mini' squid from my local tackle shop. Apparently a few match guys are using them with great success, you can slip one on a hook, say in a 2 or 3 hook rig and the fish are going mental for them. I'm fishing tomorrow so will report on what happens...

Rob

Re: Hooking squid

I like to pull the plastic bone ( the mantle ) out of the squid and remove the head and guts. Thread it on a pennel rig, point of the end hook right through the top of the squid and down free through the central cavity. Then put on three lug, then the squid slides down just nicely covering the lug. I then put the top hook of the pennel in the top of the squid to hold it.

A perfect squid/lug cocktail, the lug get some protection from bait robbers but ooze juices nicely, the squid looks plump and keeps its shape. If you want you can pop the squid head on the bottom hook at the end.

Casts fine from the boat, but would probably not take too much "power casting".
