Perhaps all your rods are designed for 3 oz

Shame Jiro Shirai or Julian Shambrook aren't on the forum then perhaps we'd get some definitive answers.

Re: leads

2-3oz is definatly the best with my new rod but thats what its desinged for, 3-4oz for my beachcasters cause thats what they are desinged for
but you have to put less effort into casting a smaller weight

Re: leads

nim
i dont need a rod i have a matching pair of zziplex quatra's all i asking as i usually fish with 6oz leads i was going to change to say a 5oz and see if i could cast any further i was wondering if other members had already tried this and had some results i have to use a 6oz because of the strong tides in norfolk but was wondering if say i went for a 5oz with different grip wires wether i could cast further but looking at casting tornaments results they seem to cast lighter leads further

Re: leads

I've got 3 rods i mainly use,
The range of weights i use is from 60gm to 150gm, at 150gm only 3 out of 10 casts im really happy with, so i only use that weight in extremly bad weather,
More often than not i use 1 rod at 60gm (0.20mm), 1 at 80 (0.30mm), and 1 at 100gm (0.342mm), and your bang on Del, the 60gm consistantly goes further than the 100gm.
All my weights are very aerodynamic and are all the same shape.
The only other thing to take into consideration is my line on the 60gm is 0.20mm, so thats gonna make a difference with the cast length, but i use a fixed spool so it shouldn't make too much difference.

Cool Re: leads

My pal is a top tournament caster 300yards plus!!, he taught me to pendulum cast. I asked him the same question.

His answer was quite simple really. In tournament casting they use lighter leads and smaller reels... why? He says that there is less resistance of the weight cutting through the air... the line on the spool of the multiplier does not try and catch up with the lead as the lead slows down before dropping, hence less resistance. He also said that you have less initial inertia requirement to get the line off the spool when the rod has been correctly loaded, in normal reels the more inertia the more the first part of the braking system kicks in... this stops the birdies for us normal casters. And lastly the cast for a 5 oz weight seems to have a smoother action.

I am like you Delboy I have to use 6ozs of lead to hold bottom in the bristol Channel... second highest tide rise abd fall in the world up to 48feet!..... but when on the ebb.... massive volumes of water run out its even harder to hold so some people use 7-8ozs.

Re: leads

My interpretation is that there are 2 stages in this :

1) Pick the right weight lead to match the sea conditions.
2) Pick the right rod, reel and line to match the lead.

The heavier the lead, generally the heavier the line, but a thicker line means a heavier lead because of the line drag through the water.

Also if there is a hoolie blowing on shore, a heavier lead would cut through the wind better.

Streamlining the terminal gear is important, a torpedo shape lead and clip down baits will go a lot further than a ring shape (can't think what they call them!) and a squid flapping around in the wind.

And theres another plus to the clip down, and that is that the bait will land in better condition and will therefore (in theory) be more effective.

I would suggest that the ultimate way to cast further is to learn properly the right techniques.
