| I haven't been out much last few weeks, various reasons, but the main one is simple. There have been no decent fish caught off the pier for weeks, the number of people fishing in a school holiday is maybe 4 or 5, nothing is happening. Seems to be the same everywhere, but I have a theory that is uniquely local to this part of the coast. Since May, tankers have been moored a few miles ofshore. I was "informed" that they were just avoiding paying harbour charges. The local BBC news then did a feature on the tankers, who are moored here because this is only area of coast around the whole of the UK where they can refuel at sea. Apparantly its safer than in a harbour. Why its here (there are several nature reserves on this coast) and not somewhere more industrial (Milford Haven springs to mind) wasn't mentioned, just seems like more than a coincidence that the fish dissapeared just after the tankers arrived. Anyone have any thoughts (less conspiritoral than than mine? ![]() __________________ Ignorance is bliss - I'm soooo happy!! |

The pier at Southsea will fish its head off, as long as you know when and how to fish it. Of all the forums I read and contribute to, this has the most idiotic answers. There's some stuff written about South Parade Pier and reading it could help your catch rate. http://www.total-fishing.co.uk/Fishe...th_parade_pier and scroll down this one - http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/H...t1899361.html& ![]() There are very few places along the S Coast where you can just turn up with a half pound of rag and expect to catch good fish. Small tip, OK? Fish at night (except for plaice and mackerel) and increase your chances by ten fold. Cod in double figures will be here by the last week of Sept. (not many, though). ![]() If the last two years are anything to go by in The Solent, leave it till November and you've missed them! ![]() |

| Re: Worrying news Local knowledge is vital for any fishing. Some areas will fish better at low some at high. If viable always look where your fishing at low water so you know where gullys are etc. Spring tides are over rated i have never had any luck fishing them. Dawn dusk or after a good blow is alo another time to try. Alot of the time simple water craft knowledge helps. You need to know what your looking for on the waters surface. tj |

At the end of the day, you're reading the internet, and as with anything on the internet you'll get differing opinions from a multitude of different people. The trick is to learn to heed the decent information and discount the dodgy stuff. As soon as I figure that out mind, I'll let you know!!! ![]() __________________ Right then, checklist: Rods. Check. | Re: Worrying news Hi Mudman. I am not sure that the tankers are the cause of the problem, as it seems that the fishing in the south of England this year has not been as good as it has in the past 20 years or so. I am not sure how it has been up North, but all along Chesil beach, which is famous for good summer fishing we have been really struggling. I put it down to the cold winter that we had. It was the coldest one for 18 years and was a return to what many say was a normal winter. It has had a substantial effect on some of our more exotic species that we have almost come to take for granted down here, such as Trigger Fish, Red Mullet and black and Gilthead Bream. The Bass fishing of Portland is almost non existant this year. The professional Bass fishermen are going out and getting 80kg of Bass on the boat on a good day. In the previous few years they were getting that per person on a normal day. Lets hope we have a mild winter this year and see a return to good summer fishing next year. The good side may be that we have a bumper Cod year coming up. __________________ Check my blog for a daily fishing forecast from Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach & Kimmeridge Bay. www.fishingtails.co.uk |

| Re: Worrying news no,no,no. had a blank yesterday...so who can i blame, gobal warming(thats a joke as earth is getting cooler),i know commercial fishermen(not that many deep sea trawlers 150 yards out),comp anglers(yes, yes). no i went at the wrong time, wrong tide, just because i have a few hours off does not mean the fish will bite. we as anglers have to stop blaming everybody else for lack of catches.. as for stupid answers.yep but then again other sites are full of twots who do sed all for angling. |
