Unhappy New Member with a beginner problem!

Hi Guys

not sure if i'm in the right forum but here goes, any help would be great!

I'm not an experianced fisher, just do the odd couple of weeks float fishing on holiday in the med each year after Rock fish etc.

where I tend to fish is off a ledge about 5-10 ft in depth. Usually as i say i catch small rockfish which keeps me entertained using live bait.

This year though, i accidentally dropped a full loaf of bread in and from under the ledge where i stand there were some wopping fish taking it in.

so, my question is... How do i go about catching a big one, bearing in mind there are hundres of little fish which take bait within seconds and the bigger ones only seem tempted in large amounts of bread.

I've tried (with no luck) using flat bread with treble hooks and balls of bread mashed round hooks with absolutely no joy!

any help would be great on kit to use and bait!!

Nathan

Re: New Member with a beginner problem!

Welcome to the forum.
I would have a go with a large hook, so the small fish cant get it in their mouths. a large piece of bread, moulded (to keep it on) round the shank of the hook with a large (so the little ones can nibble) flakey bit by the point. Try a flouro carbon hooklength to reduce line visability and drop it in when they come out to feed. Introduce loads of free offerings to get them started.
You may want a bubble float to give you a bit more control.
Good luck - it sounds like you may be into some good fun.
Hope you get to post some good pics.

Re: New Member with a beginner problem!

Welcome. Not knowing what the fish are (my guess is probably mullet), I think you have your work cut out here. Getting through the small fish is going to be the issue. With bread prices on the med a lot higher than here, you don't want to be wasting your efforts. A big bait might well be the answer but please be careful using trebles as you don't want to be foul hooking the fish. Another option might be to try something like dog biscuits that are hard enough that the small fish will struggle to break them down. This is just a theory though as I've yet to catch mullet on dog biscuits (but will experiment with it on the Isle of Wight, next week, can't wait).

Re: New Member with a beginner problem!

its my sons birthday today and my mum bought him a fishing rod, we thought it was a sea rod as it said so on the label but realised when he unwrapped it it was a pond rod so we just took it back, he really wants to get a rod for sea fishing over the sea wall as we live on blackpools seafront and it would be handy to just pop down to the beach and fish.
i have no idea whatsoever about fishing and need some good honest advice, i went o the fishing shop on anchorsholme lane yesterday and bought him the weights and hooks ect but now have no rod, the starter packs at argos didnt seem to have fantastic reviews for the sea fishing rods, please help!!!! any advice is apreciated as we wanted to go fishing tonight on the prom and still have no rod.

Hi jellytots, there must be a good tackle shop where you are in Blackpool selling all types of angling gear, you are probably wasting your money on Argus gear, a specialised angling shop is really the best bet, and generaly will give you the best advice for the area you live in ie species, bait and location.
Good luck
