Help a newbie in Hampshire

Hi Guys & Gals,

I'm sorry if i'm in the wrong place for this info! i'm new and about to start fishing for the very first time. I live near Botley in Hampshire and the river Hamble is where i intend to start.

1. Do i need a licence as this river at this point is tidel ?
2. Can anybody tell me what equipment i would need to use to fish here?

guys i'm really interested in starting this new hobby i've moved close to this river and have no knowledge at all of fishing any info would be grate.

Many Thanks
Stuart.

For one Stuart your best bet would be go ask your local tackle shop but you will definitely need a rod licence so I should get one of those in any case. My local rivers still tidal in the lower stretches but I still need a licence to fish it so find out. This river of yours is it a big river, small river???do you know what's in there???again go ask your tackle shop they'll put you right. Once you know what you can expect to catch then we can help put you right on what gear to get. I would say probably a good starting point would be an Avon type rod & a fixed spool reel don't skimp on these you could just buy a cheap quiver tip rod but you may find that its designed for commercial waters instead of rivers & have to upgrade it so go for something like an Avon rod I'd say. An Avon road has got a bit of poke & will last you but not break on the first decent fish you get on it. Best bet Stuart is ask your local tackle shop they'll know what you need to get started. Find out the answers to some of these questions then just keep asking questions as that's the only way to learn mate, perseverance & you'll catch. Good luck & tight lines.

Rob.

Stuart hi ,

firstly no license is needed to fish the hamble as its all salt water , i would get a cheap carp set up , 12 lb line and some 3 oz leads to get the feel of it , lots of school bass to have fun with mixing in with some big buggers when you get confident , mullet , the odd sea trout eels , and also flounder ! , ragworm for bait and your away ,

lee.
