Fishing Crantock beach and river Gannel - desperately after help First of all hello and I hope this is the correct area for my question! I have fished for the last forty odd years but I'm after some sea fishing advice please. I will be staying at the Crantock beach caravan site next to the river Gannel and being an angler I just can't resist the temptation of giving it a go. Anyway, my question is this, I dont have any sea fishing gear but I was going to take a Carp rod and fixed spool reel and 10-20 line. I'm not fussy what I catch but just after a pair of eyes ><((((º> . Are lures any good, spinners and plugs with me Carp rod? I would love any info about the river, what to catch, where to catch, tackle and tactics within the confines of my Carp kit. I do also have a fly rod but don't know if thats any good there! I would only be able to fish from the shore on the river or beach, sorry to be a bit vague but I would love to catch something but don't care what lol Take pitty on a poor freshwater noob! Thanks mates ><((((º>

A carp rod is perfect for spinning or plugging for sea fish. They make great bass & flounder rods for light estuary fishing too. Should be OK for weights up to about 3oz, although this will depend on the rods rating. Don't know the river of which you speak, but a ragworm or sandeel fished at close range will usually sort out estuary bass. A fly rod combined with long streamer flys to imitate sandeels or small fry will also catch bass, mackerel & garfish. Good luck.... ![]() __________________ "The fish and I were both stunned and disbelieving to find ourselves connected by a line." William Humphrey "

Re: Fishing Crantock beach and river Gannel - desperately after help you know me to well philip. well i mate first up welcome to the forum. i am known as either pompy or ollie. ON THE BEACH well matey on the beach with a carp rod. i would have fun with the mackerel and pollock. a set of feathers and a spinner will be needed. feathers - shrimp feather by storm. they cos £1.49 and a storm 28grm storm spinner aswell. the spinner is used as a wieght and as a lure. FISH TO EXPECT .feathers. mackerel bass pollock garfish shad/scad john dory ( highly unlikely but it has happened) .spinner. mackerel bass pollock garfish i would defenatly have a go in that river. use worm, maggot or sweet corn. even bread fo bait. IN THE RIVER i would expect grayling, trout, chub and barbel. other species may turn up good luck my friend regards ollie

Re: Fishing Crantock beach and river Gannel - desperately after help Ahha thanks for the info mates. The rod is 2 3/4lb so should be ok for some lead action. I can't see me tackle trotting tackle for the river as I would land up taking the kitchen sink but would just like to either spin or chuck out a lead and worm. So, your saying to chuck out a lead with either lobworm, ragworm or sandeel then? How do I fish that, do I need it nailed and is some sort of normal freshwater running lead idea ok? I like the idea of spinning best of all, would you guys use spinners or feathers from the beach? I don't know how far I will be able to cast, I'll be on 20 braid so that should be ok should'nt it? What sort of size lures do I need please? Lastly (not really lol) but what sort of size leads and hooks would I be looking to use, what sort of hook lengths? Do I need to use some weight when spinning? Tell me what to do mates, treat me like a true noob lol Sorry for the real noob sea angling questions mates, but if it's Essex river info you ever need I'm ya man ![]()

Re: Fishing Crantock beach and river Gannel - desperately after help like i said you use the spinner as a wieght for your feathers. the ragworm , use on a 3oz lead on a running ledger rig. use a 1 1/4 ft trace with a size 2 hook. put the hook through the mouth of the worm and thread it round over the eye of the hook. sandeel is better float fished. use a tiny hook and just hook it once through the snout. ragworm you will probably catch pouting bass wrass bream smooth hound sandeel mackerel garfish pollock bass and sometimes rays, depends if the lure in the area. but for cheaper and maybe more exiting fishing i would use the feathers with the spinner. good luck ollie

Re: Fishing Crantock beach and river Gannel - desperately after help Thanks for the info Ollie, sometimes I need told what to do then I have little choice. Too much choice sends me round the bend mate. All I want is a bit of fun sport, I don't have enough time to pick and choose species so I would rather spin for anything anyway. Man a 28gram spinner sounds like an unmanned missile lol, do I need a licence to fire that thing lol Got it, I will use a monster spinner with or perhaps with some mackerel feathers for whatever hits them!! What would happen if I fished a spinner in the river Gannel, I hear there are Trout/SeaTrout in there, is there any chance of them on the spinner or what else could there be in the river mate? or a worm of some sort with a 3oz lead cheers Ollie, think thats about it mate..... er maybe more to come lol
