Fly the sea!

Even before writing this I know I'm going to get some stick from someone.
I am holidaying in Wales shortly, by the sea, and I want to fish. I would love to try for mackeral just using the tackle I have - Fly rod and reel and large flies I have made myself. Apart from 'stupid bugger' is there anyone out there who has tried this?

Re: Fly the sea!

not silly at all but great fun.
Also take a sinking line and try for pollack off the rocks and for the ultimate fun on a fly rod go for a mullet, better than a bonefish for fighting power.
Spin a bit of deerhair on a hook and add a couple of the artificial plastic maggots you can buy at most tackle shops. Deadly!!!!
have fun and ignore the detractors who would rather fly fish for mackerel with a 4 ounce lead and stout rod.

Re: Fly the sea!

Go for it! Its one of my plans for this summer, wading around in shallow sea's with a fly rod and a box full of flies, way better than hauling them in with 'unsportsmanlike' heavy tackle.
Have a wild time and post your results.

Re: Fly the sea!

Mike Ladles website is worth a look at. I just can;t remember what it's called.
I can't imagine a more sporting way to catch fish from the shore. Have a go.

Re: Fly the sea!

www.mikeladle.com

Very good site, it's in my favorites. Pay close attention to the the "saltwater" and "tacktics" links on the left hand side. If you're interested in sea fishing, I reckon reading "Operation Sea Angler" is a must. There's sooooo much good info in there.

Re: Mackerel, I reckon pound for pound they are the best fighting fish in our seas. Certainly right up there with mullet. I spin for them with an 8' 30gr rated rod and it's great fun, so a fly rod will put a smile on your face!

Have fun, let us know how you get on.
