sand eel worries

I have herd that the number of sand eels is dramatically declining due to sea temperature rising. Apparently this is affecting sea birds massively for the worse just wondering if it will affect the fish as well. Or will it just make them even hungrier so we can catch them hope so.

Re: sand eel worries

i would imagine the effects would be small as predators will just as easily eat any-other fish, and as the sand eels move north other species will be moving north from their normal grounds to ours and so filling the gap, also some predators may well simply follow the food, remember these changes are very slight and over a long period too.after-all at the end of the last ice-age the many food species became extinct to humans but we just adapted and eat other stuff.
but having said that i did get the derby winner wrong.....mutters......grumble....weres me cider...........thud..

Re: sand eel worries

It's not just climate change.

Sandeels have been targeted by the 'dark side' of fishing for decades.

They were being used by the thousands of tonnes as fish meal to grow wheat in the Russian Steppes.

Commercial exploitation in the N Sea has led to a decline in numbers of birds along our NE Coasts and a knock-on effect through the whole food chain.
