OK, but before you write me off as a greeny-conservationist (which I'm not), I'm probably saying to you -

KEEP 'EM, AS THEY MAY NOT HAVE MUCH CHANCE OF SURVIVAL IF YOU THROW THEM BACK.

PERHAPS, WHEN YOU HAVE THE DOZEN OR SO YOU NEED, YOU WILL STOP FISHING FOR THEM.

By the way, it's more sustainable and more fun to catch them one at a time ...

Good fishing.

Re: Am I addicted now?

I went. Got another 18 odd mackerel as keepers with about half a dozen chucked back. Interesting about the handling thing. I tend to use an old cloth to hold them whilst I de-hook them, and then thrown them back whilst still in that cloth, holding on to a corner (not keen on scaly hands as it cacks up my rod). Sounds like using a cloth is probably no better than hands though. Maybe I should shake them off and kick them back into the sea? Hmmmm.

It seems to be a peculiarity to very small-scaled and thin mucus layer species (especially mackerel). Maybe pout and poor cod too.

Removal of any slime or scales is obviously not beneficial to the fish.

Wet hands are recommended on coarse and most game fish or don't remove them from the water at all.

Dry cloths to be avoided.

As MPs would say ... RESPECT!

Re: Am I addicted now?

Speaking of respect, I noticed people today on Budleigh beach just chucking mackerel into bags and not even attempting to kill them. Now I pretty much slice the head in 2 down the middle with my filleting knife to ensure a quick, clean death. I did get a little perturbed though when a gutted & beheaded one was still flicking around a bit.....
