Trace Length

I finally got some time and inspiration yesterday to make my own rigs for the very first time!!!

Having purchased some rig bits from the local tackle shop for about £11.00 I made up 6 Pulley Pennel rigs in just over an hour. Off the shelf rigs would usually cost me about £2.60 a go and I still have loads of rig material left over. Making up the rigs got me thinking about length of hook length.

Question......Should a hook length be varied as the tide picks up?

Fishing the Bristol Channel up at Clevedon the tide really rips through either side of high water. My thoughts here are that a longer hook length has more chance of flapping around in the tide missing the fish hard on the bottom. Conversely a shorter hook length has a better chance of staying tight to the sea bed.

Is there any logic in what I am thinking here?...what would you guys recommend?
