sea tempratures.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

just thought i'd pick your collective brains,

data from the south coast bouys ;-

http://www.channelcoast.org/data_man...e_data/charts/

show average temps to be approx 4 degrees c' down on this time last year .

how do you think this will affect the run opf spring species,
or do you recon its more down to moon phase/ time of year than sea temp?

Re: sea tempratures.

I would have thought sea temp played quite a large part.
The spring/summer fishes might be hanging about waiting for the temp to rise then suddenly appear everywhere when we hit a certain mark.
Not sure how quickly the sea can warm up or how fast a fish can swim (depends how big he is & who is chasing him).
How long does it take a cod to swim from Chesil to Dungeness?
How long does it take a mackerel to do the same?
Hope it warms up soon though.
Does anyone know where the spring fish go in the colder months?

Re: sea tempratures.

Chimet (on W Pole off Hayling) hit 4.4 degC two weeks ago.

I've not seen it that low in the 22 years I've lived here!

Tonight, it's still only 5.8degC (water temp) ... it's quite rare for under 6C to be registered.

Usually, the cold temp means good survival for cod and plaice larvae which tend to get scoffed by surface bacteria in a mild winter/spring.

I've had a bash for plaice at St George's and South Parade Pier these last two days ... not a twitch; and no crabs!

Give it 10 days at least for a plaice bash!

Re: sea tempratures.

Sea Temps off Sydney Australia have been getting noticeably higher (2-3*c) the last few yrs. But that said in the last couple of weeks we have had a pool of cold water in close to shore 18*c.
As a rule most of our summer species do not really fire until 20*c so this had had a bad effect on some fish, others have been driven into the upper reaches of the harbour where temps are still quite warm.

Re: sea tempratures.

Guess the only way to tell is to give it a go...
Weather permitting will be going to Chesil mid (14th ish) March.
Will see if anything is showing, meanwhile I will leave it to the penguins. brrrr
