| Re: multiplier- greys , gmag 6, Hi GeeJayy. I pulled this from another forum so these are not my opinions, hope it helps: Soz bout the delay, only just clocked this thread.... A few week's ago, I borrowed a test reel (g-mag 6) to have a little trial with from my local tackle shop, so I'll post 'my' opinion of the reel. First impressions were - The build quality is good but I do house ????'s as to the strength of the interchangeable sideplate, if reel takes an unfortunate tumble on that sideplate. The reel is of larger proportion to abu reels, but it doesn't weigh anything like it's size shows. Yes - I actually weighed the reel, and weighed a crome abu 65' ct rocket against it. The g-mag 6 was only 2oz's heavier than the abu, despite it's obvious larger dimentions - so the g-mag 6 would feel nicely balanced when clamped to a rod. I also noticed the spool looked quite high from it's reel foot, but the spool is situated on the cage to sit closer to the back cage bar (where thumb stretches over), so I was very suprised when I actually clamped reel to rod, I could stretch my thumb over the spool for a good grip, and quite nicely too (I got small mits, lol). Before I took the reel out, I decided to have a little play with the quick interchangeable spool system. After 10 minutes of play, it really was a doodle of a system to get used to. While the reel was apart, I decided to remove bearings housed on the reels spool (bearings were just as easy to remove as a 525mag/abu reels are). After flushing bearings with lighter fluid (I didn't know what oil grade was laced in bearings to start with), I re-lubed bearings with yellow rocket fuel. Also noticed there was no brakeblocks (bb's) situated on the spools allocated pins, tho - quite frankly, this reel doesn't need bb's bcoz the magnets(4) were ample on it's own for supreme control (even for novices). I can now see the arguement of bb's falling off it's allocated pins, for quick spool interchanges in actual fishing situations - not being much an arguement at all t.b.h, bcoz infact, the bb's are of much use as the strings were to pinocchio. Tha mag adjuster (slidey), was a tad sticky but I don't know if this was bcoz of the previous users before me. The carbon drag was silky smooth, the ratchet is useful with a good clicker pawl (unlike the useless abu ratchets), but the 5:1:1 gear ratio is something to GRRRRRRRRR about. Reel clamped to a century cccLD, mounted in the low position - with a 5oz lead clipped on (used the line, which was already on the reel when given to me, I assume it was 18lb by the look of it's diameter) - Mag slidey set on it's maximum setting - I proceeded to an aerialized brighton cast (all casts were made with this style cast) and let fly. Lead went out smooth and could see the magnets having a great effect on the leads flight. After reeling in, I thought sod the one click of the slidey at a time mularky - I adjusted the slidey to the middle of the mag control panel. Another cast, again, lead went out smoothly and with no hint of a fluff up, but a much better distance was achieved. Pushing the boat out on the next cast, I set the slidey 3 notches from it's zero setting. Another cast, although this cast was a little mis-timed on my behalf, the lead went sailing out, but the reel started to fluff up, tho, it sorted it's self out before lead hit the water. Arm now aching from it's slow retrieve, I decided to have one last cast at the same mag setting before getting on with some proper fishing. This time, the lead went even further with a better cast and not even a hint of a fluff up either. I was quite impressed with the distances this reel was achieving and with bait too. There isn't an awful lot between this g-mag reel to those already on the market distance wise in 'fishing' conditions, it's a shame the gear ratio is so slow, otherwise this reel could be a joy to use. I'd probably pick the g-mag over the abu for big fish purposes, but I'm affraid it loses out to a 525mag/sloshes etc, if that was the case. I don't know where the g-mag sit's in the fishing armoury/market, bcoz for the price - there are reels already in place that has this reel in it's pocket with the requirments needed. The flaw of having such a slow retrieve, unfortunately, severly limits the options in finding a use for the reel that offers something different to reels already in it's market place. Oh yea, the quick interchangeable spool system is different - tho peeps usually have a spare reel handy for those situations bcoz, by the time you buy a g-mag and spare spool, there's no doubt an angler could of bought 2 seperate reels anyway. Well that's my opinion for what it's worth. __________________ Check my blog for a daily fishing forecast from Weymouth, Portland, Chesil Beach & Kimmeridge Bay. www.fishingtails.co.uk |

| Re: multiplier- greys , gmag 6, I have 2 of them and they are better than my ABU 6500s Mags which required regular gear changes. They do need some prevenative maintenance before use. The ring which allows the quick release for the spool need removing and and good coat of water resistant grease ( I used litium based ). The Mag lever also needs a clean with a scalpel to remove the last bits from the moulding and some silicone grease to get it operating smoothly. After that I took it up the local field for a few practise casts. To start with it did not "take off" like my ABUs. I backed off the Mag to halfway,it was better, but still not good. I whacked a few more casts and went home dissapointed. I then cleaned the bearings in Alcohol in a mini ultrasound cleaner meant for jewelry. Then a quick wash with lighter fluid and lubed with 3 in 1. What an improvement ! Smooth and fast casting. beat the ABUs by 25 yards on a 5oz lead. The retrieve is a little slow but the gear design without the anti-reverse means that it should last forever if you grease it regularly. A bargain for £60 or less ! |
