trawler warning!

Hi Guys,

Heard today that the main reason the flounder fishing has dried up is the fact that the bloody trawlers have taken tons off the spawning areas, again, and crewmen on these things have been heard to say that they keep an eye on the angling reports on internet forums for indications of where to fish, in fact the crewman in question thought it was highly amusing that anglers were giving things away, so that he and his kind could move in and destroy the sport. With this in mind, i'll be careful what I post in the future, unless it's a celebratory one when I hear of another trawler lost at sea...

The fishermen know were to work without reading catch reports,i actually ask local fishermen were they think would be worth me trying for certain species from the shore. As for thinking a boat sinking is cause for celebration=your SICK!!!!!(Thats being polite)

Re: trawler warning!

Agreed fishermen dont need us to tell them where to fish.
As for trawlers being the reason for the lack of Flukes then i m not so sure.
Overfishing, more shoal bass , more cleaning agents going into tthe drainage system could all be having an effect.
As for your trawler sinking comment i think you should go and have a word with yourself

Re: trawler warning!

big trawlers crews know the sea, and our marks are old news. that said the smaller netting boats after sole and turbot will wipe out a small localized spot if advertized all over the net or more to the point when pissed up in the local pub. this all said thay still have a living to make and a family to feed, even if i dont like it but thats surply and demand
as for the comment about trawler men lost at sea ,i dont need to say anythink
but i guess the beer was out and it was a slip up after a jug or 7 of fine beer. well i hope it was

Re: trawler warning!

It has alays been the case around Neport and Cardiff that the local drag boats usually two rowing boats drifting with the tide dragging the bottom with nets always used to fish an area called farm fields at uskmouth for sole but then due to someone on here mention another place too often they moved their opporation to the Lambies near Cardiff and it is very rare to get sole there anymore

Re: trawler warning!

Apologies for the first comment, I never meant to infer any loss of life, just the equipment involved in wrecking sea angling. A one mile exclusion should bve a start

Re: trawler warning!

OK, dogmax .... I'm not an ally of the commercial industry; but draw the line at Euell missiles (S to S, if you get my drift ) ... although I still have one up my sleeve for Essex Ron if he tries to make a break for it along these shores.

That's tripe ... I'm not a bass defender or proponent.

Fact is Flounders spawn, like plaice in 200' + of water (NOT IN HARBOURS)

The postage stamp flounders I have caught in 50 odd years amount to 1 (impaled on a lead spike); and the number of bass I have caught with flounders in their stomachs = 0.

If I post that I caught 3 x double figure cod in 40 minutes, you'd take note the same as a well-informed under-10s commercial skipper (luckily, bigger boats are not allowed in close) ... and the same as most lads on here would.

Where? What bait etc.

I think we have to look at the science to understand why flounders are so few after so many before. That only happens (scientific study) when the species is a 'cash crop'. Unfortunately the demise of the flounder may just be it's association with similar species which are also close to being 'wiped out' in my area (sole and plaice).

4lb plaice being returned by me ....

difference is that it was alive and fit; not like the tonnes ditched every day by the 'industry'.
