Re: Casting I'm another who uses the overhead lob and probably get about 60 - 80m max from it but I'm sure a lot of people cast too far. I fished at Redwick on the Bristol Channel a couple of times in the summer and on each occasion had people near me pendulum casting up to maybe 200m, I was probably out 50m and had loads of bites while they had much fewer (no one actually caught on any of the occasions!) even though I was probably by far the most inexperienced angler of them all.

Re: Casting yes pross i agree i have fished with my friend he can cast another 75-80 yards further than me and 9 times out of 10 i catch more than him. but thats only fishing for doggies and whiting on local beaches. when it comes to fishing berry head or hopesnose or longquarry he out fishes me every time and gets more species too. so some places i would say you do need to be able to cast that little bit further. and its more about knowing how to fish a venue rather than just getting to it and blasting as far as you can each time __________________ fishing for fish is not as simple as you may think!

Re: Casting cant agree with you more. but whilst i dont want casting to become anything more than the ability to contact fish at range I feel it is very important for me to learn how to cast big distances. not saying im gonna hit the beach every session and just whack it as far as i can - but feel that it will maximise my chances on those occasions where nothing seems to be happening in the ''overhead thump'' region of water and nothing close in. Also fishing the ebb tide on big surf beaches where the water drops quicker than you can walk yet the fish are still feeding just outta your range! lol Thanks for all the replies though lads - seems to be a popular discussion and surprisingly more of us just use an overhead thump at present. but im getting a zippy for xmas if i keep on the right side of the purchaser and think in order to get her moneys worth i need to be able to put the rod through its paces! i may change my mind depending on how many monster birdsnests i have during my lessons! __________________ South Wales Angling Guide - Shore Angling in South Wales

The ability to cast long for fishing is another weapon in your amoury, true a lot of catches are made within a 100yds of the shore, but what if the fish are 140 yds out on a shallow beach????? Then long casting is the only answer, and the best casters will catch all the fish, anybody can cast 50yds to catch them not many 120yds + Distance isnt the be all and end all of fishing far from it, but on lots of occasions it can save you from a blank And what does it take to cast 100yds + a good instructor and a bit of practice once you know how to do it its with you for good. surely its worth the effort???? Cheers, Terry ![]()
