will this reel be able to handle ray and things?

Are you thinking of using it as a boat reel or shore reel Steve? I wouldn't use it as a boat reel. I would choose the Abu 7000.

As a shore reel, it's a good choice, but I think the 6500 CT C3 would be a better choice or the Penn 525 Mag. Both are racy reels capable of big distances in experienced hands.

seen 525s birdy too much :? so that put me off them

The Penns seem to be the choice of the tourny casters.

No Steve. I'm an Abu man. 6500, 6600 Lever, 7000 & 9000, oh and a cheap Penn 175 that is a racy little reel but is murder in a head wind, so I don't use much.

There are two types Steve. There is the 6500 Elite and the 6500 Mag Elite. Check out Devon Angling website, they had some good deals on Abu gear recently I believe.

I own a sportsmag and a 6500mag elite,I also own 2xPenn 525mags 1x knobby 1xslidey. All excellent reels,if you can tame the 525 with a couple of drops of oil you'll find you have an ultra strong virtually rust proof fast retrieving piece of clobber,the knobby especially able to cast great distances with almost infinite mag control.
After saying all that i must confess i Love them all.
