Post Leader Knots

Just been thinking about leader knots.... prompted by a post from Forum Admin on Daiwa Tournament Line.

What knots do you guys use to join your leader to your main line?

What poundage do you use?

Have you had any crack offs?

Would love to hear your views.

I use this knot | Click Here |
Its simple to do and it is very strong

Quote:
What poundage do you use?
Depended on shore or boat leader
Shore go by the weight casting - me 3oz lead = 30lb

Quote:
Have you had any crack offs?
No - just luck or using the right leader

Does it show and overhand knot first in your shock leader? Then pass the main line through it and pull tight?

Re: Leader Knots

i use the same knot as richard, i use mainly use a 30-40lb leader with 18lb main line
had afew crack offs, 1 due to damaged end ring, 1 due to using too bigger weight (usualy only use a 3oz but was using a 6 in different venue) and 1 when i hjad just tied the knot for my mate on his brand new rod n reel, he cast out n lost his only really decent rig n weight, he wasnt happy, lol

Re: Leader Knots

I use a similar one - will be trying the "albright", but currently it's more of a single knot in the leader (15/50, btw), followed by a uni-knot in the 15.

I always test it by giving it a really good yank, once tightened - if it's got a kink during tying, it will snap.

Since switching to 50lb leader about 15 years ago, I can't recall a single crack-off caused by leader or leader knot. Plenty from a birdie on the way out, however! Watch out for the old end-eye trick too! I always let some line go before beginning the power stroke, to make sure it's not caught up.

Yeah - that would do it! LOL .. That's why I'd always have a diamite tip ring, if possible, but none of the pre-built rods seem to come with these, although BNHG seem to last pretty much forever too!
