Re: Leader Knots

RULE OF THUMB.....

When using leaders this should help....

For every ounce of lead, your leader should be multiplied by 10lb.

It's as simple as that..5oz = 50lb. 6oz = 60lb.

Personally I ALWAYS use ULTIMA POWERFLEX 70lb. CLEAR.. never had any bother with it, knots up lovely, and basically is as safe as owt!

My mainline is ULTIMA F1 15 - 18lb. black for beach work, and ULTIMA F1 25- 28lb. black, when on the rock edges and rough ground work..

Re: Leader Knots

I use the Sea Angler leader knot (half hitch and grinner) with 60lb shock leader as I normally use 6oz leads in the Bristol channel. Had one crack off but that was due to the bale arm closing on the line mid cast but I don't really cast very hard so might not be the best judge.

Re: Leader Knots

just one question.
i found (cos kev keeps pushing me to 'hit it harder')
i keep catching the leader knot on my thumb when casting and it hurts!!!
do you think this is because im not getting my thumb out of the way far enough when releasing? or is the line slipping out from under my finger without me knowing about it before i release?

any tips would be handy

and i also use the 10lb per ounce of lead leader rule

Re: Leader Knots

Dave, unless you have a level wind (which, if you do - then ignore this), then get used to making sure the knot is hard to the edge of the spool, then you should have no problem with it catching your thumb (unless it's 3 inches wide )

As I hear the knot come through the end-eye, I start working toward putting it on the left - if you mis-judge then make sure you let some out and do it again, it's definitely worth the extra effort.

Cheers,
JB.

Re: Leader Knots

I use drennan tapered greased weasel shockleader and Ultima F1 BLack 15lb for most general shore work over cleanish ground.

JB i already do that but still when casting the knot seems to whack my thumb and my knots are tiny tidy knots it must be something to do with my release i think hopefully i am going fishing again tomorrow so i will practice on it
