Re: Additives and scent baits

what you have been saying juanpablo reminds of another method we used years ago,
Have heard you heard of salted lug ?,i was only a teenager(yes,it was that long ago!) i used to lay out any left over lug and cover them in salt,
These were left for 24 hours and then put in a jam jar.
i used to carry that jar with me wherever i went,it was always handy when i ran out of bait.
if i remember rightly dabs and pouting loved it,it was tough as old boots,
a good stand by bait.

Red face Re: Additives and scent baits

I recently tried bait additive, but not on the bait i put a mastic nozzle on a long tailed lead filled it with foam & blocked the end driied a few holes in it & injected the additive in just before casting working on the theory that creating a scent trail would bring the fish to the bait, It did'nt work well cos when casting out it sprayed the next angler with additive.Oh well back to the drawing board. As for wd40 my results were the same as norfolkboy caught with & without.

Re: Additives and scent baits

i have thought about pre prepaing my squid by filling them with minced macky n left over bait with aditives in n then freezing it but that requires to much effort n it could all just fall out in cast onto some poor person walking there dog

hey paul yes salted lug!!! around me the black lug pumpers who supply the shops freeze down any lug they cant sell or any that have blown. They squeeze all the guts out so that crystalisation doesnt occur and they either add peat (usual graden store stuff) or salt. If you buy frozen dungeness blacks they are normally covered in peat - this stops the lug freezing to the wrap so when u open it you dont lose the skin on the wrapper! The welsh boys often salt the blacks as this apparently toughens the skin more making it ideal for bristol channel codding.
A packet of cr@p salted blacks (when i say cr@p i mean the wraps you buy as emergency bait when all good stuff is gone - the blacks that smell rotten and have blatantly been frozen and defrosted and frozen again!!!), anyway - those particular packets are DEADLY for estuary flounder and sole, dabs, dogs and whiting wont say no either...

Re: Additives and scent baits

Interesting thread, this .. I've just bought some bait additive from the same people who make the "synthetic" peeler crabs (The Lincolnshire Peeler), that someone was talking about the other day - could have been Ben?

This additive is supposed to be peeler flavour with real crab extract, which according to tests, makes the crabs leave the bait alone, but attracts the fish. I won it in an e-bay auction, and I'm gonna give it a whirl, see what happens. It stinks!

As far as preserving bait goes, the only thing we used to do is gut yellowtails and roll them - they used to last for weeks like this, just squeeze them out, and make sure there's no real juice left.

I'll report back on the success of the additive ... can't see why it wouldn't work.

Wish me luck, by the way - my fork's coming out of retirement and I'm off bait digging (for yellows) at 6 am tomorrow ..

Cheers,
JB.

Re: Additives and scent baits

No mate, it's made by "The Lincolnshire Peeler", but I have had a look at the smart-baits website ... they make a sort of "Crab Stick" don't they, whereas the Lincolnshire Peeler is more of a gauze bag, full of smelly crap!

Must have been someone else who started the thread - sorry for putting you in the frame!

Cheers,
JB.
