newbie fishing with lures

Hi I was introduced to fishing by a mate a couple of months ago whilst in ireland. We fished off Kayaks in a bay, had a great time and caught a few mackeral, or rather he did. Only bait he used were some feathers and a luminous worm. Looked a doddle so off i went and got some basic kit in readiness for a holiday in Cornwall. Had a couple of unsuccessful go's whilst i was down there but the sea was pretty rough and not too safe fishing off the rocks so perhaps didn't give it enough time. Also tried fishing in the camel estury at high tide but again no joy. Final chance to sea fish this year is in a couple of weeks when i'll be in Pevensey in sussex. (bout 10 miles from Brighton)Just looking for some advice on what i should be using as it would be great to land my first fish! I've noticed that there is scant mention of lure fishing on this forum, which kind of lends me to believe few people use lures or its not well regarded? Any info much appreciated. Cheers all. Mark
