| Hi folks, I want to start using a good shock leader for some serious casting, I've never used one before. So I went shopping online and ordered up some nice shiney new line...a big bulk spool of some 24lb and 30lb line, and a small spool of 'stren saltwater high impact hard mono leader' coming in at 60lb test. All seemed like a good idea, but I just recieved the package yesterday and the 30lb line I have used as my main line is 0.45mm, the shock leader I got must be at least 1mm!! There's just no way the two can be tied in any kind of castable knot I'm sure. Am I missing something here, did I just buy the wrong stuff? Seriously I think I could put this 50 yards of 60lb mono with my gardening equipment and it wouldn't look atall out of place next to the strimmer thread. Any thoughts? | Re: Leader diameter? 30lb is heavy line for shore fishing . On clear ish ground I would only use 15lb and as for shock leader Ive always used tapered shock leader line . This makes it easy to join the lines together __________________ Richard|Sea Fishing |Carp Fishing| Spud Gun | Zander fishing | Fishing Reports | Hunting Reports |

| Re: Leader diameter? Check out greenhearts link in the rigs forum, there are special knots for attaching 2 different diameters of line. Would agree that you main line is probably a tad too heavy, I started with 20lb and have dropped to 15 now. I read an article that gave the views of 7 top anglers & they all had their own favourites. I just don't buy the cheapest & hope to get something reasonable. Though the last spool I bought, was because it was red . __________________ Spahill <:--- --- --- --- It was this big --- --- --- ---:> |

| Re: Leader diameter? Well I bought this new reel recently for my beach caster, it's huge, on the side it says the length it will take for .35 and .45mm line, so I just opted for .45 and found it to be 30lb. I also read that shock leader should be roughly 10lb for every oz and my beach rod says it'll cast 4 to 8 so I opted for a nice medium 6 and figured 60lb shock leader. Seemed to make sense at the time. It actually seems curiously thin for 30lb line...my friend has some the same thickness but weaker. Oh yea...clear ground just doesn't happen within any stretch of walking distance very often so I wanted something real tough for fishing in amungst the rocky weedy bits...wrong tactics perhaps? |
